Seldon Grant Obituary

OLIVE BRANCH -- Seldon S. Grant, 81, passed away Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 2:50 p.m. at home.

He was born Sept. 1, 1929, in Tamms, the son of Eldon and Dovie Dyer Grant.

He married Charlotte Grable on Nov. 3, 1956, in Mounds United Methodist Church.

They were the parents of two sons, Kenneth E. Grant, deceased Jan. 4, 1975, and Bradley Keith Grant.

Besides his parent and a son, he was preceded in death by an infant sister.

Survivors include wife, he affectionately called Lottie; son, Brad and his fiancé, Sharon Williams, of East Cape Girardeau; sisters, Frances Travers of Springfield, and Pam and husband, Bob Timm, of St. Charles; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

He graduated from Mounds Township High School in 1947. He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force in the Korean War, as radio operator from 1951 to 1955. Retired from ICGRR after 38 years as a locomotive engineer, he was a 32nd degree Mason Caledonia Lodge 47 in Olive Branch. He belonged to Ainad Shrine in East St. Louis, Elks Lodge in Cairo, American Legion in Mount Vernon, life member of the VFW in Cape Girardeau, and attended Olive Branch United Methodist Church.

Sel was a lover of the outdoors, always took great pleasure in making a vegetable garden and sharing with family and friends. He had enjoyed hunting and fishing and taught and shared these sports with his sons. He and Lottie took pleasure in fishing and taking vacations together. Sel had made and kept numerous friends wherever he lived. He always wanted to be the giver and helping others any way he could. He will certainly be missed by his family and friends.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 8, in Crain Funeral Home in Tamms, with the Rev. Brent Gordon officiating, with a flag presentation by the Illinois National Guard. Interment will be in Green Lawn Memorial Gardens in Villa Ridge. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, with a Masonic service at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Olive Branch Methodist Church or Shriners Children's Hospital and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Lottie and family,
We were so sorry to find out that Seldon had passed away. We wish we would have known at that time; come to see Seldon one last time; and visit with you and just let you know how much we think of both of you. Seldon was the sharpest dresser! He was such a nice and truly wonderful person! And what a very special couple you are. Lottie, we have missed seeing you and Seldon at the club. We are so glad we were able to know Seldon; he is first class!
With deepest sympathy & fond memories,
Tommy and Tammy Whiteside.
