Carol Tolliver Obituary

CHRISTOPHER -- Carol R. Tolliver, 84, died Sunday, May 1, 2011, in Herrin Hospital, after a long illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, 2011, in Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher, with Brother Jerry Akin officiating. Burial will be in Harrison Cemetery in Buckner. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial donations can be made to American Heart Association or National Kidney Foundation and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Carol was born Oct. 26, 1926, in Christopher to William G. and Bertha (Ord) Tolliver.

She graduated from Christopher High School with the class of 1944, and she never married.

Carol spent most of her life working for CIPS in Christopher. She was an active member of First Christian Church throughout her life.

She taught Sunday school to children of various ages and also worked with them in a great variety of art projects. She also held various offices in the church.

Carol was director of the preschool department and did much work with shut-ins and the elderly. She loved young children and often took them on trips, including a trip to one of the first McDonald's play lands in the area.

She also was active in the Franklin Players, a local community theater group operating during the summers at various locations around the area. She was active in the church's quilting program, and her talents will be long remembered by those with whom she shared her skills and her goodwill.

Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, William and Linda Tolliver; and cousins, Huella Hawkins of Cahokia, and Naomi June and husband, Bob Flatt, of Christopher.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Jeanne Tolliver; and one sister in infancy, Lois Eileen Tolliver.
