Carrie NEUFELD Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Dec. 20 to Dec. 21, 2016.
NEUFELD, Carrie
A theft took place. A mother from a child. Three to be precise. We are not left to mourn, as that would be to acquiesce to the darkness of death. We choose to aspire to her tenacity and strength. To live long, to share, to create. To exist despite the spectre of hopelessness. We chose to be inspired by her gift of art, of craft, of right and wrong. We choose to move forward. Like a deft hammer blow on a flake of softened metal, we are the creation of her art. A mother like no other. We will miss you, and forever reminisce you. Carrie Neufeld passed away on December 18, 2016, at St. Paul's Hospital, Saskatoon. surrounded by loved ones. She is survived by her husband Scott, her children, Foster, Flinn and Sloane, her siblings, Eric Neufeld (Char Warkentin, and Brahm (Robyn Reist), David, Jamie), Denise Bakken (Kevin, and Brooke, Judd, Drew), Patricia Ward (Darryl, and Amber (Jeremy Cleek)), Mary Neufeld (David Evans), her parents-in-law, Jean and Norm Herriot, sisters-in-law Jackie Kerby ( Bill, and Graeme, Justin, Mitchell, Taylor and Brandon), and Lisa Grajczyk (Peter, and Jonah and Julian), brother-in-law Trevor (Karen and Kate, Jon, Sage and Maia), as well as many special friends. She was predeceased by her mother Irene in 1992 and her father Ernest in 2010. Carrie was born December 23, 1964 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, where she attended Assiniboia School, Weyburn Junior High, and Weyburn Comprehensive. She attended the University of Saskatchewan for a year, at which time she met Scott Herriot, her partner for more than 30 years. She worked at the University of Saskatchewan Bookstore for more than 25 years, most recently as an assistant manager. The couple had three children, Foster, Flinn and Sloane, who attended Aden Bowman Collegiate. All played basketball and volleyball, and Scott and Carrie attended nearly every game they played. Carrie found much in everyday life to celebrate, with a special focus on family. She decorated the family home lovingly with beautiful art, and carefully tended her yard and garden, keeping those spaces warm and welcoming to family, friends, and co-workers, for birthdays, holidays and life's other special occasions. We will always remember her meticulously organized birthday parties, her legendary scavenger hunts at Christmas and Easter, and her sense of humour. An artist herself, she preserved many of these special moments with her camera. Carrie was also an expert seamstress and spent much time at sewing clothing, knitting. She also enjoyed painting and cardmaking, along with books, music and movies. Leonard Cohen was a favourite musician, and The Art of Racing in the Rain, a favourite story. And every day, she took Izzy and Kobe for their walk. The family would like to thank everybody who came to celebrate Carrie's birthday at St. Paul's, and who brought food and comfort to the ward, and St. Paul's warm-hearted and accommodating staff. Great thanks to Dr. Nave. Her last week was full of the things she loved: family, friends, relatives, dogs, a Christmas gift opening, and getting dressed up for a big birthday party. The family also wishes to acknowledge the staff of Nordon Drugs, the true sisters of mercy. Compassion, concern and commitment are their names. Thank you, ladies. At Carrie's request, there will be no funeral service. Details on a wake/ celebration will follow. Condolences may be left at www.prairieviewchapel.com Arrangements are entrusted to the PRAIRIE VIEW CHAPEL, 306-242-7248.

Carrie always had a fantastic sense of humor.

I know what you are going through right now is very difficult, since my beautiful wife also took a similar journey last year.

My condolences go out to Carrie's family and friends at this time of deep reflection.

We were lucky to have shared many laughs with Carrie in the stands at years of basketball games. We enjoyed chatting about making things and about our families. Our lives are richer for having known Carrie. Thinking of you Scott, Flinn, Sloane and Foster.

Scott
Know that my prayers and thoughts are with you and your family
I called on Carrie for years at U of S and always was warmly welcomed. She had such a great sense of humour that I will miss.
I had lunch last year with her and Diane at the Faculty Club. I know that it was not easy for her to get around but she made the effort, arriving with that special "Carrie smile"
I know it must be a difficult time of year for you but I know that Carrie is still smiling down on all of us
God Bless and keep you and yours safe

Dear Scott and family, I did not know Carrie well but for many years I have had the pleasure of chance meetings with her. I was always left with a sense of what a wonderful woman she was. As has been said, very sharp, smart and witty, frank and warm. You will have enough of her in you to carry on and pull forward. My heart is with you in a very difficult time.
