Dear Linda,
We are extremely saddened to hear of the passing of David. As you are aware, we are now out of Canada and cannot be with you to personally express our sympathy to you and our most sincere appreciation for a man who lived a quality life that is exemplary to all. To us, David has not only been a long time neighbour, he has been a most caring friend. David showed everyone that caring for others, while serving as a professional, mentoring students or supporting friends in providing mental strength is the ultimate meaning of living a decent life. He showed all of us what human decency is. As a fellow faculty member at the U of S, I was honoured to have his guidance when I was leading the internationalization of the university. He was one of the few who saw the need for looking beyond the immediate horizon in sharing knowledge, health care practices - ultimately, he led the globalization of medical education at the U of S. As a fellow Rotarian, David was true to the principles of Rotary - he took on the task of `service above self` most seriously and served as an example to others. As an individual, David has been a fighter - he never let his multiple illnesses bring him down. From every bad turn in his illnesses, he emerged stronger - thus showed others on the ways of coping but without losing the fighting spirit.
Your own dedication in support of David`s life has been exemplary. We sincerely hope that you keep up your strength to face the physical loss of David as you no doubt would continue to cherish the spirit of his values and ideals - you have been a loving and active partner throughout his life! Our thoughts and prayers are with you and children.
Most sincerely,
Asit and Ila

Dear Linda,
I was so, so sorry to hear of David's death. I was privileged indeed to be part of the 4 member team of classmates with him in medical school. He was so caring and compassionate even then. Dear Linda, Popkin "kids" and extended family. When I first met David in the anatomy lab over 50 years ago, I realized he was a warm, bright, funny fellow. Joyce and I enjoyed getting to know both of you during our 4 years at McGill and have greatly enjoyed our interactions and interconnections over the many years since graduation. We are so sorry he had to deal with his several illnesses, and have not been surprised to hear of his valiant and noble struggle. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all in your grief, buoyed by an understanding of his (and yours and ours) eternal destiny. Love, Bob & Joyce Orr

Dear Linda and Family,
Our deepest sympathies at the lost of one of the finest human beings - David.
We came to know of David when he was the Dean of Medicine at U of S. He had a passion for equity and social justice of people all around the world. In this context, when I met with David in 1992 he expressed interest to visit India and establish collaboration with Medical Schools in India. I was working in Ottawa at that time. We both traveled to India and he found that the people of Omayal Achi College of Nursing (OACN) were the right partners for U of S, School of Medicine. For the next 5 years the students from School of Medicine went to Chennai and benefited from their exposures to rural and urban health with the guidance of OACN.
David was always charitable, concerned about others and I consider myself coming across him in my life was a blessings. We enjoyed very many meetings and discussed global equity and advancement of Medical and Health Sciences.
David will be very much missed.
Linda, may the Lord Almighty grant you and your children to overcome the loss and grief. David will always remain in our hearts.

David Popkin was the role model in every aspect of life.....colleague, teacher, physician, friend, advisor and humanitarian. As a member of the gynecologic oncology community, I can attest to the respect and admiration he received which carried to the days as an educator, department head, and dean. Who can forget the smile, the glint in his eye as he thought of someone or something. We have lost the man but not the memories. Rest in peace.
