Shirley PARKINSON Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Sep. 16 to Sep. 19, 2014.
Shirley Parkinson (nee Hewko) & Donald Parkinson
With great sadness we announce the deaths of our parents, Donald Richard and Shirley Carol Parkinson, on September 10, 2014.
Leaving to mourn their loss are their daughters Sarah (Tyson) Smith and Zoe Parkinson (Quinton Fisher). Left behind are her parents, Slavie and Naden Hewko; her siblings Terry (Michelle) Hewko, Lucas, Alexandria, Nicholas; Dennis (Jackie) Hewko, Ashley (Aaron) Smith, Brenden, Dylan; Mariann (Judson) Rich, Cameron, Courtney; Noreen (Chuck) Garon, Matthew, Christian; Janet (Roberto) Rodriguez, Tyler, Kaitlyn; Allen (Fay) Hewko, Craig, Ann; and Tim (Cathy) Hewko, Zachary, Kelsie, Joshua, Hailey. They are also mourned by her Aunt Olga (Garth) Johnson, Aunt Helen (Guy) Lipsey and family; as well as the Tryhuba family. They have left behind his Uncle Andrew (Joan) Parkinson, Brian (June), Vera (Donald) Lawrenson, Anne (Martin) Parkinson-Cade, Andy (Deana), and Allan (Linda); Eileen (Allan) Green, Sheila (Stan) Swindlehurst, and Phillip (Liz) Rowlandson; Doris (Geoffrey) Ball, Keith (Anne), Graham, Neil (Susan), Gillian (John) Greenhalgh and their families.
Donald was born on August 31, 1954 in Preston, England to Joanne and Richard Parkinson. Donald grew up in Lancashire, England near the family farm. Donald trained as a project engineer in England before moving to both Spain and Dunedin New Zealand to pursue his career.
Shirley was the first child of Slavie and Naden Hewko. She was born on March 31, 1958 in Macklin, Saskatchewan. She grew on up the family farm at Cactus Lake and graduated from Denzil Sacred Heart School. She attended the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon where she earned both science and nursing degrees. She started her career as a public health nurse in Meadow Lake and also worked at the Key Lake mine as an occupational nurse.
Donald and Shirley were married on August 22, 1982. They lived in Unity while Shirley worked as a public health nurse and Donald worked as a heavy-duty mechanic. They purchased their acreage two months later and in 1990 Donald started the business GD Tractor Salvage, which later became British Tractor Wreckers. Shirley and Donald were blessed with the birth of their two daughters; Sarah Naden was born in 1989 and Zoe Emily-Anne was born in 1992.
Shirley loved working with young mothers and completed her Lactation Consultant certification. She enjoyed promoting health in her community and helped found the Unity Community Resource Center. Shirley also loved gardening and maintained a large flower and vegetable garden. She was an active member of her church and was a Girl Guide leader for many years, as she loved working with children.
Donald enjoyed volunteering for his girls' activities. Donald was an active volunteer with the Unity Air Cadets and loved taking his daughters to concerts and tractor auctions. He enjoyed nature and always spoke of his love of the North. Donald was also a former member of the Unity Volunteer Fire Department. He loved to travel and recently travelled with Shirley to Mexico, Chile, the Canary Islands, and England.
Donald and Shirley will be greatly missed by their girls and their family and friends. Whenever the night sky lights up with the Aurora Borealis, we will remember them.
Vigil of Prayer Friday, September 19, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. and Celebration of Life Saturday, September 20, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church (Unity, SK) with Father Gregory Roth officiating. Sarah and Zoe, I have just learned of the passing of Shirley and I wanted to add my message of condolences. Shirley and I along with two others travelled together in Europe. I fondly remember all the loving letters she sent with her Christmas cards and treasure them even more knowing that they will not be coming. My you find comfort in the Lord

Sarah and Zoe: I can't begin to know the sadness and sorrow in your hearts. Trust in the Lord and He will give you strength and courage to carry on.
I met your mother in 1983 in Meadow Lake when she was living and working there, and your father when he came to Canada to marry your mother. I am priveledged to have called them my friends and enjoyed the few times we were able to visit when a whim or hockey would take us to Unity. We all met in the restaurant the one time, and other times, your mother would meet me at the rink for a coffee and conversation. They will be sadly missed.

I would like to extend my sympathies on the loss of Shirley and Donald. Although I did not know Donald I knew Shirley professionally as we both served on The Breastfeeding Committee for Saskatchewan for the last few years. I remember Shirley as a good person with a remarkable sense of humor. Shirley held a few postions on the committee and performed her duties with great proficiency. We had many good laughs together working on our common interest to promote breastfeeding. I was deeply saddened to hear of her passing. My thoughts are with your family during this difficult time.

September 19, 2014

Not only did I get to see Shirley come in the doors to work, I was blessed to see her huge smile, and hear her warm hello, every morning. There is a void now in our halls, that we all will fill up full with endearing memories.
Through weakness, there is strength. My prayers go out to an amazing large and diverse family. I hope that you all find comfort knowing there are SO many people who have you in our thoughts throughout every single day.

My deepest sympathy to all the family of Shirley and Donald. I did not know Donald but I first met Shirley at University as she was a leader on the Nursing Student council. She continued to be a leader through her entire career. Then we worked together in the North Battleford Health Region in the North Battleford office and then she moved to the Unity office. We were pregnant the same year and always shared stories about the kids when we met up or talked on the phone about work - but we could never not talk about the kids too! She was so very proud of her girls. Shirley and I also shared the love of helping women breastfeed. She was passionate about her work and always did everything to perfection. She will be greatly missed.

September 17, 2014

Such a great loss for the entire family, especially you girls, Sarah and Zoe. We sure feel sad for you and lift all of you up in to our father in heaven for strength and comfort.

I've been trying to remember how/when I met your mom and dad - it escapes me. Seems like they have been in my life as long as I have lived in Unity. So many memories - so much laughter. Watching your Dad try to keep Gyp out of the soccer game, your mom managing ALL those Sparks over the years, all the things that you and Angie did through the years....your Mom and Dad just were always there. They will be missed.
