Joseph Goodwin Obituary
MUNCIE - Joseph P. Goodwin, passed away at home on Monday, November 16, 2015.
He was born in Huntsville, Alabama to William Percy and Mary (Bitnell) Goodwin.
Dr. Goodwin earned his BA in English from the University of Alabama and his Master of Arts and Doctorate of Philosophy in Folklore, both from Indiana University.
"Joe" joined Ball State University in 1982 as assistant director in the Office of University Publications. He became one of the assistant directors in the Career Center, providing career programming and advice to faculty and students in the College of Sciences and Humanities, as well as to all teaching majors.
He is the author of More Man Than You'll Ever Be: Gay Folklore and Acculturation in Middle America. He served as president of the Indiana Chapter of the National Association for Job Search Training and on the Assembly of the Midwest Association of Colleges and Employers. He also served on the executive boards of NAJST and the American folklore society, and served on the advisory board of Heritage Education Resources.
Surviving are one sister, Mary Gray Nelson (Tom) of Holland, MI; two brothers, Pete (Kathy) Goodwin of Aubrey, TX and Jack (Susan) Goodwin of Louisville, TN; four nieces, Kristin (Steve) Spykerman of Jenison, MI, Melanie (Doug) Corcoran of Grafton, MA, Tracy (Cary) Brown of West Monroe, LA and Brittney (Brad) Kerley of Argyle, TX; and several great-nieces and nephews.
In accordance with Joe's wishes, there will be no calling or services. Cremation has taken place.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Folklore Society, Eigenmann Hall, 1900 E. 10th Street, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, 47404.
The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

So sorry to hear of Joe's passing. I first met Joe as a junior assistant professor up at Memorial University, and he was a kind and supportive colleague. He always took an interest in people, personally and professionally. He shall be dearly missed. With sympathy, Giovanna Del Negro
