Dr. Stukes mentored me through my undergraduate years at Lander and continued to provide me much needed encouragement throughout my graduate studies and my entire teaching career. He even invited me to join him as a co-leader on several of his European study tours. I modeled much of my teaching style upon his. No doubt, Joe was equally important to many of his other students. Bless you, and thank you, Joe, for all you did and for who you were.

Regrettably I've only learned a year later of Joe Stukes' death. He was a wonderful mentor and friend ever since our Lander days together in the mid-1960s and afterwards co-leading tours to Europe.

So very saddened to hear of his passing.
I enjoyed a trip of a lifetime with him and a group to Scandinavia. He helped me pull together the trip at the last minute so that I could surprise my mom that I was tagging along too. I enjoyed his thorough knowledge of the history of each city.
My sympathy to his family.

Dr. Stukes was one of my all time favorite Professor's.
I was developing an intense interest in history and had the good fortune of have Dr.Stukes as the instructor for my first history class at FMU.
His passion and knowledge were evident from the first day. I ended up taking so many history classes because of him that I ended up as a History minor.
His portrayals of various figures from history only heighten the experience.
Florence and the state of SC have lost a true treasure as well as a real gentleman.

I was so sorry to hear of Joe's passing . He was such a dear friend to my parents, Eileen and Jim Parker. They especially enjoyed the trips they took with him. May you feel the love of friends and family, especially at this time. Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you. Don and Claudia Parker Caldwell
