Peggy Lyles Obituary

Sept. 17, 1939 - Sept. 3, 2010
TUCKER, Ga. Peggy Willis Lyles (born Mary Margaret Willis) of Tucker, GA, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away on Friday, September 3rd. Along with extended family, she leaves behind her husband Julian L. (Bill) Lyles of Tucker, daughter Leslie Lyles Middleton of Jupiter, FL, son Robert H. (Bob) Lyles of Atlanta, grandchildren Henry W. Middleton III, Robert Clay Middleton, Lauren Hope Lyles, and Renée Grace Lyles, and sister Cathy Willis of Cincinnati, OH.
The oldest of three daughters, Peggy was born in Summerville, SC and grew up in North Charleston, SC with her late parents, Dr. and Mrs. Robert Leon Willis. She graduated cum laude from Columbia College and also attended The Citadel and the College of Charleston, achieving recognition as a collegiate pageant winner at all three institutions. Mrs. Lyles later obtained her MA degree from Tulane University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship. She taught English at Sophie Newcomb College, and subsequently was a faculty member in the English department at the University of Georgia.
An accomplished artist, Mrs. Lyles became a prolific and internationally recognized haiku poet. She won numerous awards, including first place in the 1999 San Francisco International Haiku, Senryu and Tanka contest, and the Sakura Award in the 2008 Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival Haiku Invitational. Her publications include several chapbooks in addition to a full-length book of haiku, To Hear the Rain (Brooks Books, 2002). Her extensive dedication to haiku poetry was reflected by her involvement with The Haiku Foundation and the Red Moon Anthology, as well as her Associate Editorship of the journal The Heron's Nest.
A private memorial service is planned. In lieu of flowers, the family requests consideration of donations to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation and/or the American Cancer Society.

I was checking to see what wonderful things Peggy has accomplished, and found she had passed away. She had become a wonderful poet. I filled in for her when she taught English at Palmer Junior College, and visited her in the hospital, and she made such an impression on me. I am a poet and artist myself, after a varied academic career. I thought I might paint a portrait of her as May Queen, and share it with you. If you have contributing ideas, I am easy to locate on the internet, because of my odd name. I am sorry Peggy passed away so young. --Rennie (Myreen Moore Nicholson)

Peggy was my friend from elementary school through high school and beyond. We were king and queen in the 7th grade for May Day. As seniors, when Peggy was elected Queen of the May, she chose me to be her king again which I considered a very high honor. I have fine memories of her family and our relationship.

Leslie,..Greetings from Charleston. I hope you are doing ok. I was very sorry to hear of your loss of your Mom. My thoughts & prayers are with you & your family. My Mom always talked about how pretty your Mom was. I'm sure you will remember that your Mom was one of my Mom's bridesmaids way back when. We miss you in Charleston, but when you come back for a visit, tell Rob Fowler to let me know you are coming. If you are interested, I'd enjoy treating you & your family to a complimentary photo shoot anywhere in town you might like it done. Take care Leslie,...your long lost cousin,... Clyde McDonald

To The Family,
I am so sad to learn of the passing of this beautiful person. I was in the Class of 1957 with Peggy and remember her inspiring warm personality. She was never without a smile. May the Love and Memories she leaves in the Heart of each of you be your comfort in the days ahead.

...I ask of you, don't cry for me, for I have lived my years.
...Instead, celebrate my Journey.
...We only get one ride in Life and I simply took my turn.

Excerpts from "My Life Song" by Linda Ellis.

May these words also give you comfort.

To carry on in haiku without Peggy is unthinkable to me; but already I know that I can find her in a hundred things a day. I have but to listen, to hear her voice. Such a splendor of gifts Peggy has left us!
