Elaine Barnes Obituary

Elaine Player Barnes COLUMBIA - Mrs. Elaine Player Barnes, 74, died Wednesday, February 27, 2013, after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Barnes, daughter of the late James Waddell Player and Mildred Cromer Player, was born May 23, 1938 in Columbia. She is predeceased by her husband, the love of her life, Henry Russ Barnes Jr. Mrs. Barnes was a loving wife, mother, sister, and aunt, who was affectionately called "Laynie". She was a homemaker and avid bridge player. She also enjoyed the beach, bowling, reading, fishing, cooking, needlework and art. Her life verse, "May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer" (Psalm 19:14), was demonstrated by her kind spirit, generosity, and sense of humor. Mrs. Barnes attended Dreher High School, Columbia School of Cosmetology and later became a national hairstyle model. She won the title of Miss Cayce/West Columbia in 1956. She was also a contestant in the 1956 South Carolina Miss World Pageant. Mrs. Barnes is survived by her daughter, Renee Barnes Stover of Columbia; granddaughters, Sidney Leigh Stover of Columbia and Emily Brennan Stover of Atlanta, Ga. She is also survived by sisters, Judy Giles, Cathy Tronco (Mike); brothers, Phil Player and Robert Player, all of Columbia, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, James Player, and a sister, Janis Player. A visitation will be held from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, March 1, 2013, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at the funeral home, with burial immediately following in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family would like to extend thanks and gratitude to Leland McElveen, M.D., Kimberly DeWitt, ACNP and the staff of South Carolina Oncology Associates, Michael Roberts, M.D. and Eddie M. Williams, III M.D. Memorial donations may be made to Epworth Children's Home, 2900 Millwood Ave., Columbia, S.C. 29205 in memory of Mrs. Barnes's mother, Mildred Cromer Player.
