Margaret Meriwether Obituary

Margaret Woods Meriwether, classicist COLUMBIA - Miss Margaret Woods Meriwether of Columbia died April 15, 2013. She was 87. Miss Meriwether was born in Columbia, February 16, 1926, the eldest child of the late Professor Robert Lee Meriwether of Columbia and Mrs. Meriwether, the former Margaret Babcock, also of Columbia. Miss Meriwether graduated from University High School in Columbia in 1943 and attended Wellesley College for three years. After a serious illness, she completed her undergraduate studies at the University of South Carolina, class of 1947. She worked in New York and then taught Latin at Winyah High School, Georgetown, South Carolina, for four years before being accepted into the graduate program in the Department of Classics at Yale University. She completed her master's degree at Yale in June 1957 and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece in 1957-58. After returning from Greece, she taught Latin at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for ten years. In 1968 she moved back to Columbia, and taught Latin at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School until her retirement in 1990. She spent her last years at the Episcopal Home at Still Hopes in Columbia. Miss Meriwether is survived by three nephews, George, Robert and Nicholas Meriwether, two nieces, Rebecca Meriwether Lindsey and Margaret Babcock Meriwether, and by five great-nephews and nieces. The funeral will be on Thursday April 18, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at Still Hopes. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements. The family will receive friends in the parlor at Still Hopes, immediately following the funeral. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Woodyard Fund, c/o The State, PO Box 1333, Columbia SC 29202, a charity she had long supported.
