Angelo Amodio Obituary

Angelo Anthony "Tony" Amodio COLUMBIA - A Mass of Christian burial for Angelo Anthony "Tony" Amodio, 91, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 17, 2016, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with burial in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery. The rosary will be recited at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, December 16, 2016, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with visitation following until 7:00 p.m. Mr. Amodio died Monday, December 12, 2016. Born in Middletown, N.Y., Tony was the eldest son of Italian immigrants, Theodore and Mary Oliva Amodio. At the onset of WWII, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy Seabees, traveling to San Diego, Calif. for basic training and eventually being deployed to the Pacific. He was a member of the 105 Construction Battalion where he saw action in New Guinea and helped liberate the Philippines. At the end of WWII, he attended broadcast school in Jacksonville, Fla., graduating and moving to Camden, S.C. He was employed there for many years with radio station WACA as an engineer and local radio personality. In 1965, Tony relocated to Columbia where he was employed with Dixie Radio for ten years and eventually retired from the Ben Arnold Company in 1988. Tony volunteered at Providence Hospital for 32 years where he accumulated 22,135 hours and received a Volunteer of the Year Award in 1992. He was known and loved by many at the hospital and was affectionately referred to as "Mr. Sunshine." Tony never left home without his smile. He will be remembered for his good nature and his love of people. God and family were foremost in his life. He enjoyed fishing, working crossword puzzles, writing poetry, spinning a yarn, telling jokes and had a gusto for living each day to the fullest. Tony is survived by his wife of 20 years, Margaret; his children, Edward Amodio, Robert Amodio (Betty), Suzanne Amodio, Joan Kishline (Robert), Stephen Amodio (Marina), Sybille Eisenhower, David Amodio; stepsons, David Parrish (Aleshia), Charles Parrish (Ashley); 22 grandchildren; and dozens of great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Maria Amodio; daughter, Patricia Sharpe; granddaughter, Kristen Amodio; his parents; his brother, Dominic "Babe" Amodio; and his sister, Fannie Amodio. Tony was a great husband to my Sister, she will miss him so much. I am glad that I was able to get to know and spend time with the two of them. He was a man that loved to laugh and share laughter with all that had contact with him. Tony was a gift from God to my sister and her children and all who knew him. He will be sadly missed by all.

Tony was such a sweet man. I will remember him fondly. He brought light and humour to the workplace and to all he encountered. And oh the jokes. He will be so missed. Prayers to his family.

Tony's smile lit the halls at Providence Hospital where he volunteered countless hours over the years and brightened every room he entered and he had a joke to lighten each day. But there was another side of Tony that was also very special, a deeply reflective, spiritual side: Tony loved the Lord and faithfully served in Jesus' name. He was loyal and giving and his heart was as big as he was. I thank God for Tony and know Tony and God are enjoying a great time together now as Tony enjoys the fullness of life!
Margaret, to you and his family, I offer my condolences and my prayers.

Our neighbor, Tony Amodio, was one of a kind. His funny stories and songs kept us laughing. Once when we were backing out of our driveway to go on vacation, Tony came running out of his house with his suitcase. Sometimes at Christmas he would give us tiny bags of marshmallows with snowman poop written on the bag. He's just a special man who was always willing to help and we love him.
