Austin was my personal Hero. I admired his abilities but was more impressed with the man I knew him to be! I wanted to be like TOM!! He allowed me to catch for him whe he was getting ready to go to Spring training. He really encouraged me in my athletic career. Belton Laney and I were guests of Austin and was privileged to watch him in a series with the old Washington Senators when we were on our Senior Class trip. I listened to as many games as I could when he was pitching. I visited Fenway Park for a game recently and the True Red Sox Fans still love and admire Tom and the great things he did for theRed Sox but the thing they admired most was his character and the fact he was never about himself but the Team 1st! Austin's impressed me the most not by how fast he could throw a ball but how he cared about people and their lives as evidenced by the tremendous difference he made in so many lives as their Probation Officer and the time he gave to to the high school baseball team as well as aspiring young baseball players in nearby communities! TOM will be missed in Cheraw. He was a Giant of a Man and Athlete! I am grateful for the positive influence he had on my life and Cheraw is a better city because of the Fame he brought us but because of the difference he made in so many lives! Fisher DeBerry
