Ashokkumar Patel Obituary

Ashokkumar C. Patel, M.D., 59, of Clarks Summit, passed away on Monday, Feb. 24, 2014.

He was born to the late Chhotabhai and the late Lalitaben Patel on Jan. 10, 1955, in Maharashtra, India. He graduated from the Government Medical College and Hospital in Nagpur, India, in 1976. He went on to marry Nayana Amin in 1978, and they both immigrated to the United States in 1980. After initially moving to New Jersey, they eventually settled in Clarks Summit, Pa., in 1985.

Ashokkumar was a revered psychiatrist with multiple psychiatry subspecialty board certifications. He was the medical director of psychiatry at the Geisinger Community Medical Center and the medical director of the Scranton Counseling Center. Dr. Patel's thirst of knowledge led to a subspecialty in sleep medicine, and he established the Sleep Lab of Northeastern Pennsylvania. His drive to help further the medical field included conducting clinical research trials in sleep medicine and teaching medical students and residents as the specialty medical director of psychiatry at The Commonwealth Medical College in Scranton, Pa.

Ashokkumar had a great passion for travel and culture. He has traveled across the globe to more than 35 countries with his family.

Ashokkumar's other great passion was his family. Living forever in their hearts are his beloved wife, Nayana Patel; beloved children, Nupam, Yena and Natasha; and beloved extended family. He was especially proud of being a part of his extended family at the Scranton Counseling Center and GCMC seventh floor unit.

His immaculate soul and vivacious personality has brought joy to all around him.

The friends and family would like to thank the Geisinger Community Medical Center emergency department, along with the Geisinger Medical Center (Danville) neurosurgery and critical care staff.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests a memorial donation be made to the Vraj Hindu Temple, 15 Manor Road, Schuylkill Haven, PA 17972.

Family and friends invite all in celebrating the life of Ashokkumar Patel on Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., in Dunmore, Pa. Cremation will immediately follow.

Dr. Patel was my psychiatrist from age 13 to 25 (when he passed). Words cannot describe the positive impact he had on my life. He saved my life more times than I can count, and showed me love and compassion when I needed it most. I´ll be 36 soon and my mental health is in great shape and I live a full, happy, excellent life, and it´s all thanks to Dr. Patel´s care both as my doctor and as a fellow human. He lived to make the world a better place and he truly did achieve that. Thank you Doctor, I miss you every day and I thank you forever.

I just learned of his passing and am deeply saddened by the loss of such a good person who contributed so much to so many. Even though I haven't known Dr. Patel long, it was obvious he was a very kind, caring, compassionate, intelligent man. He helped me immensely at a very difficult time. He will be sorely missed.

To Dr. Patel's family, friends and colleagues, my sincerest condolences.
Dr. Patel was more than just a "psychiatrist" to me. He was a major factor in my treatment and my growth. I've never been good with words. I don't know how to say all the things I am feeling. He would have known what I meant. Dr. Patel has taken care of me for 11 years. He has watched me grow, from the out of control, troubled teen that I was to the woman I am now. He has been the longest relationship to date that I have ever had (outside of my family). Dr. Patel was such a wonderful and genuine man. In my opinion, he was not just a doctor, he did not just follow the motions to become a doctor, he was MEANT to do this. His passion to help his patients shined through his eyes. He had such a good and honest soul. I will miss him so very dearly. He will always be in my heart. I can never express how much he actually meant to me and still does. He will live on in my thoughts. I wish nothing more than for his family to feel at peace and for their hurt to stop. I wish words could heal their hearts, because then I would never stop talking. May he rest peacefully. Forever in my heart.

His smile, his kindness, his knowledge, and his love of mankind will live forever in so many of our hearts and the future remains before us to celebrate this remarkable man.
