Donald Welsch Obituary

Donald E. Welsch, formerly of Scranton, died on Nov. 22, 2015, at the age of 92 at St. Mary's Villa Residence, Elmhurst. He was the son of the late John C. and Edith Welsch and husband of the late Marion Howells Welsch formerly of Scranton, to whom he was happily married for 66 years.

A graduate of Scranton Central High School, he served in the 102th infantry during World War II and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for combat in Germany. He joined Wesel Manufacturing Co. as a machinist in 1947 and, amazingly, retired from the same company as its president.

He was a longtime member of Concord United Church of Christ, formerly Dr. Jones Memorial UCC and later of the Providence Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Hyde Park Lodge 339 F&AM, Keystone Consistory, Irem Temple, the choral group Young at Heart and North Scranton Rotary. He was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.

He developed a love of sailing as a young boy at Wrighter Lake, Susquehanna County, where he continued to spend his summers until shortly before his death. His greatest sailing experiences, however, were the long cruises on the Chesapeake Bay that he shared every spring and fall with his beloved wife on their sailboat, the Mary Anne.

An accomplished jazz trumpet player, he played for many decades throughout Northeast Pennsylvania and was a founding member of the Irem Temple Jazz Band.

He is survived by a brother, Welland; a son, John (Jack) and his wife, Linda, Roaring Brook Twp.; son, Tom and his wife, Rhonda, Fairport, N.Y.; and son, David and his wife, Dianne, Oswego, N.Y. Also surviving are grandchildren, Don; Stephen and wife, Krista; Peter and wife, Elizabeth; Eric; Matthew and husband, Joel; Ashley and Tory; and great-grandchildren, Julian, Madison, Noah, Althea, Katherine and Gillian; and his very special friend, Nancy Miller.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Eleanor Smith; and a daughter-in-law, Jean Welsch.

The family would like to give special thanks to the administration and staffs of St. Mary's Villa Residence, Hospice of the Sacred Heart and Caregivers America for offering outstanding care and compassion.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 24, at the Howard J. Snowdon Funeral Home, 1810 Sanderson Ave. All are welcome to funeral service to be held in the chapel of St. Mary's Villa Residence, 1 Pioneer Place, Elmhurst, Pa., at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 25. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Villa Residence, 1 Pioneer Place, Elmhurst, PA 18444; or to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 600 Baltimore Drive, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702. For online condolences, please visit www.duffyandsnowdon.com.

To ALL of the Welsch family-our condolences for the loss of "Uncle Donny". I remember well the stories of my Dad and Mom enjoying Wrighter Lake. Also fond memories of sailing/reunions on the Chesapeake. Particular to me was his interest in my playing of the flute, and his encouragement to join the Crystal Band. How he loved music!' Today my family enjoys his love of the sea. 92 years of a life well lived. God Rest His Soul.

Dear Jack and Family I have had the honor of knowing and caring for your dad as Nursing Supervisor at St Mary's Villa. He was a great gentleman. He and I had many a good conversation together. May God give you and your family strength and peace during this difficult time. I am so sorry for your loss.

May I offer my sincere sympathy on the death of your dad. I have many happy childhood memories with the Welsch's both at your home and at Wrighter Lake. May your memories diminish the sadness of his passing.

Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of your Dad; your brother; your grandfather. My father, Paul W. Schroeder, began his career as a toolmaker at Wesel in the forties as well and worked there until retirement. He never spoke much of work, he was a quiet man, but in his later years he told me that your Dad and he had been workplace friends. He told me that he was a good man and that he respected him very much. I lost my Dad six years ago, and my Mom last September. With each passing of one of these dear people, we lose a part of ourselves and our society loses a valued and treasured member. Think of him as he was, strong and sure and loving. I will keep you all in my prayers, and perhaps tonight my Dad and yours will "talk shop" one more time. May God bless each of you with peace. Your dear Dad is Home.
