Michael Sheridan Obituary

Michael M. Sheridan of the Tripp Park section of Scranton passed away unexpectedly Friday, Oct. 28, 2016, at home. His wife of 45 years is the former Sandra Drula.

Born in Pittston, he was the son of the late James P. and Grace Devlin Sheridan. A graduate of St. John's Catholic High School, Pittston, class of 1963, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree and two Master of Science degrees from the University of Scranton.

He was an educator with the Scranton School District, starting his career as a teacher, he served as a reading specialist, supervisor of reading and libraries, assistant to the superintendent, director of administrative services, and CEO of the Scranton School District, with 10,000 students and over 500 employees.

He also taught as an adjunct professor at Penn State Worthington Campus, Marywood University and Keystone College. He served as past president of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Reading Association, past president of Phi Delta Kappa, past president of the Administrators Association of the Scranton School District, former member of the Scranton Federation of Teachers Local 1147, and served on the executive board. He volunteered for over 28 years at the Blind Association, and after retirement from the Scranton School District, he also volunteered at St. Patrick's Church Food Pantry. He was a very devout Catholic, and a longtime member of St. Patrick's Church.

As those who knew him could attest, he adored his wife, daughters, grandchildren and, of course, his New York Giants.

Also surviving are two daughters, Amy Lloyd and husband, Stephen, Scranton; and Cindy Sheridan Serge, Clarks Summit; grandchildren, Zachary Lloyd, Gavin Serge and Sheridan Grace Serge (who all lovingly referred to him as Pop); a sister, Sheila Durkin and husband, Jerry, Clarks Summit; nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday from the Solfanelli-Fiorillo Funeral Home Inc., 1030 N. Main Ave., Scranton, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Patrick's Church, 1403 Jackson St., Scranton. Everyone attending the funeral is invited to go directly to the church. Interment will follow at Cathedral Cemetery. Family and friends may pay their respects Tuesday, 4 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity. Please visit the funeral home website for information or to send an online condolence.

To the Entire Sheridan Family:

Mike was one of my favorite people. He was kind, considerate and professional. He made public education his life and it was obvious to all who knew him. He always had time to speak to you even if he needed to be elsewhere. He knew all of the employees by name and if not he made sure he learned it. Mike was a large part of the "Golden Age" of the Scranton School District when wonderful things happened in the district such as Whittier,Kennedy and Tripp Schools and other constructions in the 1970's. During this "Golden Age" in the district great working relationships lasted for decades because no one retired early. There was a sense of family, of friendship, of calmness and happiness. Much of which I attribute to Mike. I thank Mike for always being a wonderful role model, a fantastic boss and a good friend. Rest in Peace, Mike. You are missed.

My deepest condolences. Good thoughts and prayers to the entire Sheridan Family.

Shocking and very sad news. Mike and I grew up together in Pittston. We even worked in the summers for the gas and water company taking inventory in NEPA. His wonderful father got us the jobs. A buck twenty five an hour a few dollars of which went for a Stegmaier or two. The world was always right with Mike. A perpetual smile even after the Skunk incident. He mistook a skunk for the pet cat (he said it was dark)and the skunk did what skunks do. Always told the story with a smile. Unfortunately, years and miles separated our families. I last talked to Mike a few months ago at my Uncle's funeral. We promised to get together for dinner on my next visit. Mike, lets do it but can we hold off for a while? We will pop a few Stegs.

One of the best. Our deepest sympathy to Sandi, Sheila and their families.

My condolences to Mike's family, inc. his sister (Sheila), whom I have known along with Mike and their parents since my childhood. When my family visited Pittston from N.J., and visited our relatives, The Sheridans were "family" to us, although not really. "Nicer people you could not find." Always in my thoughts and prayers.

I can feel your pain, shock and loss and have said so many prayers for you Sandy. Words can not truly express the shock, pain and loss that you are going through. Sandy I have been praying for you that your faith in God gets you through this life changing loss and for Amy and Cindy who have lost their Dad. You lost the love of your life and the sorrow I feel for you is beyond any words I can say. But Mike will live on in your heart and soul and he will be with Amy and Cindy and the grandchildren as well. I've been praying all day for the you and the family, God Bless you all in this time of sorrow. AMEN.
