Eugene Shoffner Obituary

BURLINGTON - Eugene Harvey Shoffner, 82, of Burlington, N.C., died on April 9 at 12:09 p.m. following a brief illness. He was born on July 27, 1930 in Logan, West Virginia to his parents, Harvey and Naomi Sanford Shoffner. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Laura Mae Pegg Shoffner.
He is survived by his significant other, Helen Smith of Burlington; his four daughters; Deborah LeClear of McLeansville, N.C., Jennifer Shoffner of Burlington, N.C., Sandra Sullivan of Graham, N.C. and Laurie Short and her husband, Jonathan of Liberty, N.C. Grandchildren are Ryan LeClear and his wife, April of Harrisburg, N.C.; Lauren LeClear of McLeansville, N.C.; and Brittany Sullivan of Wilmington, N.C. Great-grandchildren are Saxon Layne Sholar and Laura Alexis Nelson. He is also survived by his brother, Carroll Shoffner and his wife Jo Dee of Morris, Okla., and a sister, Ann Sutton and her husband John of Elon, N.C. and nephews and nieces.
His parents moved to Burlington in the early '30's and he resided there until his death.
During Mr. Shoffner's early years he was trained by his father to become a highly skilled building contractor. In 1955, Eugene and his brother, Carroll, began a partnership in Shoffner Brothers Lumber Company. In 1962, they both decided to pursue their own careers and Eugene became a well-known general contractor in the community. During that time, he served as President of the Home Builders Association of Alamance County.
Mr. Shoffner was devoted to his family, friends and community. He was a member of Low's Lutheran Church and served the church in various capacities. He enjoyed playing golf and loved gardening. However, his most enjoyable role was being PaPaw to his three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at Low's Lutheran Church at 2 p.m. on Friday, April 12 with the Rev. Samuel "Sam" Shores and the Rev. Don Pegg officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Burlington on Thursday, April 11, 2013. At other times the family will be receiving friends at the home of Laurie and Jonathan Short, 6788 McPherson Clay Road, Liberty N.C. 27298.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Low's Lutheran Church, 2163 NC 61, Liberty, NC 27298 or Hospice & Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 918 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.

We are so sorry to hear of Mr. Shoffner's passing. He was such a nice gentleman, and we appreciated his support of our family's music. We will dedicate our show tomorrow night in Liberty to his memory. May he rest in peace.

Eugene was a great man. So sorry to hear of his passing. He used to come in my dad's store and he was always so polite and friendly. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
