Charles A. "Buster" Lowther

Charles A. "Buster" Lowther passed away peacefully in Alexandria on August 26, 2015. He was born August 27, 1926 in Dallas, Texas, the son of Alexander C. Lowther and Jeanette Pippin Lowther. The family lived in Dallas until 1931, when they moved to Alexandria. Buster attended Bolton High School, where he starred in basketball and track & field and was named "Best Athlete" as a senior. He earned his B.A. degree from LSU in 1949. While at LSU he was all-SEC in the pole vault, and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.

He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, having enlisted in the Navy in 1944, and served as an Air Force officer in the Korean War. He was a talented orator, singer and stage actor, with the ability to impeccably voice almost any accent, from British royalty to a south Louisiana Cajun. While serving overseas during WWII, he placed second in an all-services talent contest open to all of US servicemen in Europe. In addition, he won several theatre awards and contests while at LSU and was involved with Little Theatre in Alexandria.

Buster was a successful insurance agent for over 60 years, achieving the prestigious million dollar round table several times. He was a devoted father to his 5 children, who have all achieved success in their own right, and dedicated to his loving companion Mary Lee Turpin for his last 30 years. Her dedication to him was even more, especially in his last few years---thank you Mary Lee.

His passions included LSU football (he was a longtime season ticket holder and member of the "L" Club), playing golf at Alexandria Golf & Country Club, and speckled trout fishing in Grand Isle, LA where he vacationed every summer for over 40 years.

He was preceded in death by his siblings Robert C. "Bobby" Lowther, Betty Lowther Gutierrez, and Joan Lowther. He is survived by his 5 children: Charles Lowther, Jr. (Sara), James Lowther (Fen), Rebecca Cooper (Sam), Andrew Lowther, and Jon Lowther (Bailey), and by his longtime companion Mary Lee Turpin, her daughters Kathy Turpin and Merrick Valentino, along with numerous nephews, nieces and grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2015, in the chapel of John Kramer & Son Funeral Home. A reception for family and friends will immediately follow in the Kramer Sun Room.
