My uncle was there for me at a time when things were pretty rough in my young life. His brother, my father Johnny, had died and left me fatherless. I must have ridden my bike to Darrell's house a thousand times, just needing somewhere to go. Darrell always let me hang out. He had a crew of his own, but he knew I needed a positive influence to help me get thru that tough time. While I didn't see him much throughout my adult years, I did get a chance to reconnect with him several times over the last couple of years. It was fun to kid him about his "hippie" period and just talk about some good times we shared. The reconnect was good for both of us and for the first time in a long time, it was nice to represent my father in a family that loved him dearly, as did his brother Darrell. I hope to see your family this weekend when I am in Alexandria. God Bless and rest in peace. Your nephew, John.

Darrell was a good man. I worked with him at the City of Alexandria for almost 20 years and played my first ever round of golf with him and Greg. I will always consider him one of the FINEST men I've ever known. The world is surely a lesser place with his departure.

I first met Darrell in 1968. A truly fun guy to know.. his greatest wisdom he leaves with me is his line.."Jackson Street(Extension)wasn't planned, Jackson Street just happened".

My condolences to your family. He leaves a high bar for us to shoot for.
