Kenneth Baile Obituary

BAILE Kenneth Rex Baile, 95, of Upper Arlington, passed away Tuesday morning, February 28, 2012 with his beloved wife and their four children at his side. Ken was born June 4, 1916, in Cardington, Ohio, to Inez Schofield and Emory Baile. He attended Ohio State University where he joined ROTC, ran track and became president of the national education fraternity Kappa Phi Kappa before graduating in 1938. He joined Travelers Insurance and quickly became one of its top salesmen. In 1941, he was called to active duty as a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Corps and later became a member of the 58th Bomb Wing. Ken loved every minute of military service, a career that took him around the world, to bases ranging from Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, to points in Africa, Europe, India, China and Tinian Island during WWII. Upon returning to the states, he spent four years at the Pentagon, rising to the rank of Colonel. He then attended and graduated from the Air War College at Maxwell AFB and moved to Alaska, where he became deputy base commander of Elmendorf Air Force Base. He later joined the National Security Agency where he laid the groundwork for the Joint Service Commendation Medal and became its first recipient. He retired in Colorado Springs after 30 years service. Never one to sit idle, he began a second career as assistant registrar at Ohio State University and became a university supporter through membership in the President's Club. Ken was a gentle, compassionate man; a loving husband and a constant source of inspiration to his children. He was devoted to the ideals of hard work and thrift. He loved Buckeye football, bowling, barbecuing and a good practical joke and he never met a person he couldn't relate to. Many times, he'd come back from errands and begin his story with, "well, we just got to talkin' and" His was truly a life well lived. Ken was preceded in death by his brother, Ralph Baile, and is survived by his wife, Gwen; their children, Sandra (Bob) Plastridge, Michelle Gailiun (Victor Poag), Susan Baile (Tom Tuggle), Stephen (Joyce) Baile; 11 grand-children; 12 great-grandchildren; and sister, Frances McBride. Funeral service will be held at 12Noon Saturday, March 3, 2012 at SCHOEDINGER NORTHWEST CHAPEL, 1740 Zollinger Rd., where family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of service. Burial will be in the Military Garden at Forest Lawn Cemetery. To share memories or condolences, please visit www.schoedinger.com.

It's hard to summarize in a few words what the heart feels. To me, he was Uncle Kenny , always an interesting, carrying, and respectful conversationalist. Visits were always warm and meaningful. I feel a sense of gratitude for his service to country and family. Much like the attitude my own father, Dwight Benson, he lived the principle of responsible citizenship. His wonderful talents will be missed here but expanded "over there."

I had the privilege of knowing Colonel Baile from being married to his granddaughter Molly. I feel fortunate to have spent the time with him that I did during our family visits to Ohio, but now feel sad that we couldn't visit more often and enjoy more memories together. Colonel Baile has certainly touched many lives in a very positive way over the years and I know we are all very grateful for those experiences. Colonel Baile lived a very full life with many accomplishments along the way, but also left a legacy for many to admire. In the short time I got to spend with him he unknowingly taught me a few life lessons that really hit home with me and are things I will always remember. Certain topics such as the good things in life often take time and work, or being frugal and smart with your money, or living a life of balance and doing what you just gotta do. I also will be forever thankful for the way he treated my wife (his granddaughter) and the love and support he gave to her over the years. Colonel Baile will be missed dearly, but will live on in the hearts of his family and friends forever.

Colonel Baile was certainly a man of many talents. I truly like his advise to never give your children the disadvantage of too many advantages. I know he will be missed, but may the God of all comfort give all his family and friends peace and comfort.

Colonel Baile was so much more than words can say. He always told everyone the best advice from his many years of life - wisdom unsurpassed and always freely given. There are many who love and adore him inlcuding me, I spoent many years of life having dinners and talks with him and his daughter Michelle and his grandchildren Molly and Whitney. I particularly know the devastationn of those people withhis passiong and my own grave feelings of the death of this precious man. There is not a day in my life I do not hink of him and share the wisdom of parenting that he gave "never give you children the disadvatage of too many advantages". I greatly miss this great and gentle man and his wife "Bucky". I have spent the best years of my life with them and am sad beyond belief that he leaves this earth, but he leaves it such a better place than it would have been without him. I love you Mr. Baile. Your wisdom lives in me and goes to those I am around always.
