Alyce Fretland Obituary

Loving Mother, Grandma and Nana was born on February 9, 1914 in Fargo, ND to parents Louis Carlton and Sue Anne McGoon, and passed away on September 29, 2010 at the age of 96 ½ in Eureka, CA. Mom graduated from Port Angeles School of Nursing in the State of WA in 1935 as a Registered Nurse. Mom's nickname in nurse's training was "Pinky" due to her beautiful red hair. She was extremely proud of her profession and of her work with the Veterans at Vancouver Barracks clinic during World War II. During her career and all through her life, she was always there, whether it was family, friend or neighbor that had health care issues, she was always available to help for as long as she was able. Mom loved to dance and met her husband George Fretland at a dance in Cottage Grove, OR and they married in July of 1948 in Portland, OR. They had one son, Jon. George's occupation as a heavy equipment salesman caused them to move several times during their marriage. They settled in Arcata, CA in 1964, the year of the flood. They had never seen so much rain!! She lived in Lazy J Mobilehome Park for 21 years before becoming a resident of Eureka Silvercrest Apartments in 1922 after George's passing in 1988. She loved her little apartment at Silvercrest and her many friends and wanted to stay there as long as she could. With the help of her daughter-in-law Michelle, caregiver Amanda Walker and special neighbor David Goggin, she was able to stay until March of 2009, when it was necessary to move to Chamberlain's Residential Carehome. She will be remembered by all as the "Lady in Red". She rarely went out without her red derby hat and red coat. She always wanted to look her best! A special thanks to Michelle Lamb, Gina Chamberlain, the Hospice nurses, aides and chaplain for Mom's care during her stay at Chamberlain's and in her last days. She was preceded in death by her husband, mother and father, numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. She is survived by her son Jon (Michelle) Fretland of Eureka, CA; her granddaughter Amber (Tim) Wilson of Brighton, CO; her grandson Scott (Sayde) Fretland of Eureka, CA. She is also survived by her great grandchildren Brandon (her Yankee Doodle Dandy- born on the 4th of July), Tyler (her Birthday Boy- born in February) and Samantha (her precious girl- first great granddaughter) Wilson all of Brighton, CO, and Olivia (her namesake- Olivia Alyce Ann) Fretland of Eureka, CA. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Maude Krogstad of Pelican Rapids, MN; special niece Wyllis Gierdal of Coon Rapids, MN and her family; special nephew Dale (Beth) Fretland and his family; and cousins Carol Ann Hartsell of WA, Suzanne (Glen) Bateman, Nancy June DeGraw, Burt (Carol) DeGraw, Dean DeGraw and their families all of OR; and step son William Beilman of FL and his family. There will be a private family service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Hospice of Humboldt, 2010 Myrtle Avenue, Eureka, CA 95501 or your favorite charity. Arrangements are under the care of Pierce Mortuary Chapel, Eureka, CA 707-442-3751, www.piercemortuarychapels.com. Please sign the guest book at www.Times-Standard.com, click obits.

Dear Jon & Michelle and family:

We too were sadden to hear of your mothers passing but we know she is in a far better place now and walking on the street of gold. You have a special Angel looking down with lots of love. I know you will miss her greatly but just remember one day you will have a reunion like no other.

God bless and much love,

I want to extend my deepest sympathy for the passing of your beautiful mother. As a longstanding employee of Northcoast Family Practice, Alyce was always considered a favorite patient. Her beauty was not skin deep, as she always had a kind word for all.
She will be deeply missed but not forgotten.
