Arthur Howard Woods Sr.

Arthur Woods Obituary

Woods Sr. the baby of nine siblings, was born in Augusta, Montana March 28, 1928. Raised on a cattle ranch, he moved to Humboldt County in 1948 to seek his fortune in the logging industry. He met La Rae Groves, the love of his life, in 1951, sharing 49 years of marriage and 4 beautiful children together, Jodie, Arthur Jr., Thomas, and Patrick. With his wife he enjoyed motor home travel, time with the grandkids and became extremely active in coaching Little League and Babe Ruth, for which La Rae who preceeded him in death, was his favorite scorekeeper. Art was pivotal in championing for the Arcata Ballpark, earning him a street named Art Woods Drive. In addition to family, Art loved hunting, fishing and rooting for his beloved Giants. An avid bowler and bowling coach, Art was inducted into the Humboldt County Bowler's Hall of Fame where his bowling activities supported several scholarships. Other traditions were Saturday breakfast with brother Ray, wife Janet, and Patsy, the long-time blessing to his life, with whom he enjoyed gardening, quiet times and casino jackpots! With a heart as big as Montana, Art was a no-nonsense kind of guy who would give you the shirt off his back. That feisty spirit will be missed by all, including brothers Sam, Rex, Ray; grandchildren Brandon, Damon, Nathan, Dustin, Ashley, Christopher, Carly, Dylan, Amber, Jessica, Erika; great grandkids Desarae, Devon, Alea, Kylie , Tanner and 31 nieces/nephews across the U.S. Honoring his love of baseball, a memorial will be held at the Arcata Ballpark at a date to be announced. Ever the committed coach, in lieu of flowers, Art requests your donations to Arcata Little League or Babe Ruth in tribute to baseball and the kids who meant so much to him. It warms our hearts to know, as a die-hard Giants fan, Art is up there smiling and collecting big on the team he knew was a winner all the time. Good call Art! I am saddened to hear about the passing of both La Rae and Art Woods. When you grow up, you always seem to remember the role models who were either very good to you or very bad to you. I will always remember these two wonderful people as being two of the very best role models myself and my brother had while growing up. La Rae was my teacher at Jacoby Creek Elementary, and she will always hold a special place in my heart as being one of the most caring and kind teachers I ever had. La Rae came to my 1st wedding, and she also sent me a nice card when my brother passed away in 1992. Art was my late brother John Mitchell's little league coach. We spent a lot of time at the ballpark with the Woods Family and will always have fond memories of them all. John respected and loved Art. Art and La Rae were gems, I will never forget either of them. My condolences to the entire Woods family. You are in my thoughts.

What a great man Art was. I envy the time that I got to spend with him as a kid, and it was always nice to run into him throughout the years. A legend was born!

I was so shocked and saddened to hear of Art's passing. He was always a very special person with a great smile. He was wonderful to and with the Jr. Bowlers (my son Kent included) and was a great example and role model to many. I appreciated everything that he did for my son Kent and daughter-in-law Kaci. Art will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. Love, Kay Ames

Pat: My heart goes out to you and your family. Your Dad was my childhood and every other kids childhood that lived at the ball park growing up. 40 plus years and I'm still going to ball games when I can get home to attend one. You're in my thoughts.

Art will be deeply missed. His generosity and kindness towards us was invaluable. He was always there for the Jr. Bowlers (myself included). There are so many memories that flood my mind but at the same time I am at a complete loss for words. We'll miss you Art.

Uncle Art will always have that special place for me. His smile and willingness to listen and be part of our lives, even though it wasn't often that we were together. He always put family first. He will always be in our hearts.

Very saddening to hear that both La Rae and Art Woods have passed on. He and La Rae were such great people and did so much for the Arcata Community especially in that little world of baseball. We had such good times playing politics, Little League, cards, and helping the Woods family run baseball tournaments and building the ballpark. I still remember the bus load of people who came together for the trip to Burlingame to support the notion he could build the ball park. He made the most eloquent speech with tears in his eyes before the Coastal Commission and swayed them to the decision to build that ball park. He certainly was, One in a Million and we were proud to know him and to work with him at that time in his life.

Hi to the Woods': I am adding my deepest sympathy to your list of many. My boys, Ronnie, Gary and Andy Sorter loved Art at the ball field. He helped many to build their confidence and the kids loved him. He was always so friendly and would greet you no matter where you were with the biggest "Hi Kiddo". Art was never at a loss for words and I remember last seeing him while having breakfast with Ray and Janet at "The Pantry". My love goes out to the family. He was a good man. Sheral Hughes
