Elizabeth Adelaide Powell "Beth" Slocum

Elizabeth Slocum Obituary

passed away peacefully in Fortuna, California on Thursday, November 18th at the age of 94. Beth was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada on September 16, 1916. She was the oldest, with younger siblings Vicki and Bert. Her family later moved to Seattle where she attended the University of Washington and received a degree in Nursing. She was a stewardess for United Airlines when a nursing degree was a requirement. In 1941, she married Don Slocum, her beloved husband of 64 years, and settled down in Seattle where they had two children, Bruce and Diney. The family moved to Humboldt County in 1952 and eventually settled in Ferndale where Don worked for Humboldt Creamery and as the Ferndale City Clerk (a position his daughter-in-law presently holds) and Beth was home with Diney and Bruce and 9 years after Diney, their twins, Maureen and Eileen. When the children were older, Beth returned to nursing at Redwood Memorial Hospital and taught LVN students at College of the Redwoods. In 1964 they moved to Fortuna where they had space for gardens and pasture for horses and cows. Beth loved reading, knitting, baking, games of Scrabble with her family and keeping up on current affairs. Beth and Don had a strong sense of civic responsibility and passed these values down to their family. Following her retirement, Beth remained very active in the community. She worked with a number of children over the years volunteering at Winzler Children Center, participating in the Adopt-A-Grandma program at Lafayette Elementary School and working in the classrooms of Fortuna Elementary School. Her annual presentations on St. Patrick's Day complete with green cupcakes made her very popular with the children. She knitted hats for St. Joseph Hospital's newborns and for St. Vincent DePaull. Into her 80's, Beth Assisted a number of elderly women so they could remain in their homes and over the years she opened her home to a number of people who needed a place to stay. She was also an active member of the Retired Nurses Association. Beth is survived by her children, Bruce and Nancy Slocum, Diney Wrona, Eileen and Michael Keener and Maureen Bolton and Robey Agnew. She also leaves behind her grandchildren Joel, Molly, James and Nicole, as well as her great-grandchildren, Wes, Colin and Garrett. She is also survived by her sister Vicki. Beth was preceded in death by her husband Don, her parents and her brother. The family would like to thank Doris Edwards and Stella Van Werth for the great care, companionship and assistance they provided over the last 2 years of Beth's life. The family would also like to thank Hospice of Humboldt, and the wonderful women of the Memory Care Unit at Sequoia Springs for keeping Beth comfortable in the last days of her life. There will be no formal service. Instead, her ashes will be mingled with Don's and scattered together as they were in life. In the spirit of Beth's philanthrophy, donations may be made to Hospice of Humboldt or Six Rivers Planned Parenthood. Final arrangements were under the directions of Pierce Mortuary Chapel in Eureka. Dear family;
When the Ed Fish family moved to Loleta with a set of twin girls two years older to the day than the Slocum's, Beth was soon a regular part of our life. She was a most giving of clothing, advice, her time & more than I can ever express. I could never think of enough ways to Thank her but, I did try to stay in touch & pass on positive news of my family. Beth & Don were truly the most gracious people I have ever met. Please, let it be known that Darlene Satterlee & her family are so grateful to have been apart of their lives. I will miss Beth, her smile, her laughter & her very being. She was like a second mother to me..she was the Best! Darlene

Dear Slocum Family,
My father was very close to Beth and Don. He would take us over to visit and Beth always had a smile for us. They were very welcoming and kind people. I am so sorry for your loss but know that Beth has gone on to a wonderful place. My prayers are with you.
