James Daley Obituary

passed away on December 25, 2010. James was a resident of Kingsland, Texas at The Windchime Assisted Living Center after moving here to be here near his niece, Ann Starr. Prior to moving to Texas James lived in Fortuna California where he resided from 1990 until 2010. James was born February 4, 1925 in Cubero, New Mexico to May Guadalupe and Santiago Romero Daley. Both of his parents were lifelong teachers. He liked to joke that his mother came home and had him during recess. James was a lifelong teacher himself in California. During his career he taught shorthand, typing, Spanish, English, journalism and television production. He retired from the California public schools and then moved to Humboldt County where he went to work at the College of Redwoods as an adjunct faculty Spanish teacher until he retired in 2001 after 51 years of teaching. James graduated from Albuquerque High School in 1942. He enrolled at the University of New Mexico the following year. While attending UNM and studying journalism, James met his future wife Gloria Lee Kingsbury. As a student in journalism James enlisted in the Navy V-12 officer training program. The V-12 Navy College Training Program was designed to supplement the force of commissioned officers in the United States Navy during World War II. James went on to a four-month course at a reserve midshipman's school and was commissioned as an ensign in the Harvard University Naval Supply Corps. James married Gloria Lee Kingsbury April 1 1945 in Wilmington California. While he was stationed at Port Hueneme he was shipped out to Okinawa with his Seabee battalion. In Okinawa he served as a supply officer and he stated one of his most interesting experiences while in the Navy was offloading a ship during a typhoon. When the Japanese surrendered James was discharged in February 1946 and attended undergraduate school at the University of New Mexico where he received his BA degree in 1947. He then moved with his wife Gloria Lee to San Francisco where he enrolled as a graduate student at the University of Berkeley, eventually getting his Masters degree and teaching credentials from the University of California at Berkeley. James and Gloria Lee were inveterate travelers during their summers off and over the course of two decades they visited the British Isles, all the European and Scandinavian countries as well as Greece. James had three children Stephen, Nan and Jennifer. His daughters, parents, sisters, Mary Stella Bledsoe and Anna Mae Starr as well as brother Bill Daley all predeceased him. He is survived by his son Stephen and numerous nieces, nephews and friends whom he inspired with his quips, erudition and unbounded love for travel and meeting new people. Mr. Daley made learning fun and meaningful. He treated us all with kindness and respect. I will never forget him. He was one of the biggest influences in my decision to become a teacher myself. He will never be forgotten. He touched many students and lives. His kindness will live on forever.

Mr. Daley was my Spanish teacher at Estancia High School in Costa Mesa, California. He was a nice, funny, genuine and gentle soul who truly cared about his students - and, we could tell. I am deeply saddened by this news, but am truly happy that I was able to know him at all. Thank you, Mr. Daley, for all that you did for me. I will remember you with much love, forever.
