Reno Orlandi Obituary

Reno Orlandi passed on October 3, 2010, four days after his 88th birthday. He was born on September 29, 1922, the first child of Marino and Emelia (Champi) Orlandi. Reno was raised in Arcata and graduated from Arcata High and attended Humboldt State College where he majored in music and played the violin and clarinet. In 1941, Reno went to work for Bank of America and on June 29, 1942, married June Erickson. Shortly after their marriage, Reno was drafted into the Army and saw action in North Africa and Italy. Reno was also a translator with Italian citizens and prisoners of war. In 1945 he returned to Arcata where he and June raised their three daughters. In 1960 he returned to the family business, managing Marino's Club in Arcata. Reno touched the lives of many people with his smile and generosity and maintained his trademark sense of humor all the way to the end. Reno joined the American Legion Post 274 and served as president twice. He was also the Arcata Legion Post State Commissioner for the Legion Baseball, both locally and statewide. Reno was a volunteer fireman and past president of the Mad River Rotary, earning a Paul Harris Fellowship. Reno's love for music never faltered and in 1995 he joined the Kitchen Aires. He was also active with the Humboldt Jazz Festival. Reno and June were married 68 years. They traveled extensively throughout Europe, Australia and the United States. He enjoyed the family home in Willow Creek and the many parties and family events they hosted. Reno is survived by his loving wife June; daughters Lynn (Ron) Stempek, Judy (Doug) White, Janice (Kim) Kellenberg; his grandchildren Cynthia, Craig and Carson Stempek, Adam and Kory Starkey, Derek (Rebecca) Kellenberg, Margaux (Jeremy) Hought, Brandon (Jenny) White; great grandchildren Ava and Cal Kellenberg, and Olivia and Beckett Hought; his sister Rena (Emilio) Giori; nephew Wayne (Gina) Giori; niece Debbie (Jerry) Johnson; and sister-in-law Dorothy Nicholson. A service will be held Friday October 8, 2010 at Paul's Chapel in Arcata from 7-8 PM. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice. Janice and Judy, I was so sorry to hear of your father's passing. I still remember how he would come through your family room and shake his head at us girls as we were frosting our hair or whatever the latest thing we had going on with our hair! All of our parents were such a big part of all of our lives. You have been lucky to have had both of yours for a lot longer than I had mine. God Bless you all.....Love, Kathy Caldwell

To The RENO ORLANDI Family
I was saddened to see the news of the passing of Reno. I have been gone from Arcata/Humboldt County for almost 30 years but remember Reno well. Served with him in the Arcata Voluteer Fire Dept in the 1953/1956 era. Again I was saddened to read the news.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. I'll never forget my Mom taking me to Marino's right after a hugh earthquake and seeing all the booze flooding the floor. Reno always had the biggest smile and never seemed to let anything get him down. I have a lot of very happy memories of Willow Creek where there was always something going on. My thoughts are with you all.

Junie, Lynn, Judy, Janice, Rena and families. We were stunned to read Reno's obit this a.m. in a late paper. We were away and did not know of his service. I know your hearts are heavy with this loss and his passing will leave a huge hole in the family's fabric of life. June...you will now become a new woman and you will not be happy about all this will mean. Take heart from your family and be strong, always guarding your health. Grampa Tuki will be watching over you from above. We miss all the family celebrations...and Reno's jokes; and the good Willow Creek times. I won't forget him showing us how to rip off the extra grape vines on Gambi's old grapes at our cabin-1971! We are sending you all our love to keep you warm at this sad time. Best love, Marilee (DeeDee) and Bruce, Meg, Heather and Ryan and families
