Steve lived a fantastic life. We can all learn from that. He was so good at so many things. I loved playing golf with Steve. The funniest guy on the golf course -- sometimes it was hard to play a shot the way he would tease, needle and make me and others laugh. A great friend and inspiration to me and many others. My heart goes out to his family.

I just learned (while back-country skiing with Mike Dean on Mt. Shasta) that Steve had died and, to say the least, I was very bummed to hear this news. I worked with Steve early in my career with ECS and I always enjoyed when our paths crossed. I especially remember the twinkle in his eye and how everything seemed to be better, and certainly more fun, whenever Steve was around. He was a first-class "kick in the pants" kinda guy and he will be sorely missed. My condolences to his family.

What a wonderful person Steve was...what a wonderful family you have been to each other,,,what wonderful friends you all have been to so many people...and what wonderful memories you have created together. May your good memories comfort you now and always. And may you continue to experience Steve's presence within and among you.
With my love and sympathy,

There are many good attributes about Steve. The one that tops the list is his being Mr. Helpful to all. On one occasion he did a step by step taking apart and reassembling his tarp covered canopy for me so that I could assemble the one that I had, not having the instructions. One of the greatest compliments that I ever received from students was that "you teach like Mr. Garrett." Gary and Mary Ann Summers

Steve led a great life. His sparkle in his eye was bright like a star in the nights sky. I'll never forget the 'perma smile' on his face and big red cheeks. Totally awesome dude! I had so much fun mashing grapes for his splendid side job. His spirit shall remain within the Old Growth. ~Max Unger

Although I did not know him, I can see and read how deeply loved he was! May God bless you and keep you; and help you find peace in this difficult time. Always remember the best times you had together, the joy, the happiness he brought to you and others.. he was special and he has loved.
Just coming up to Baywood today, we could see how important he is and was to so many. Though this doesn't ease the pain, the loss; time will go on, and healing will come in time. Hold tight to those you love will always be with you.
Sincerely,
Katherine Clague

To the Garrett family,
I am truly sorry to hear of your great loss. Mr. Garrett was my middle school science teacher and an unforgettable friend. I will never forget his laugh, his ability to make the most mundane thing interesting, and how he always took interest in the smallest details of our lives long after we were his students. I can still remember him sitting down to drinks with my new husband and I a short time ago just so he could meet the man I choose to marry. What an amazing person! To his family, thank you so very much for sharing such a truly wonderful person with us all and know that the best parts of him live in each of us everyday. My thoughts are with you all-

I am so fortunate to have been in Mr. Garrett's science class back in 1998. He was truly one of a kind - I still look back and remember him as one of the stand-out teachers growing up, the class you looked forward to, the classroom you and your friends hung out in at lunch. I'll never forget his energy, his ever-present smile, and most of all, his sense of humor(my sister and I will still put on our "molecular goggles" from time to time!). My junior high experience would have been much different without Mr. G., and I am so thankful to have known him.

As a boy growing up in New Zealand I loved fishing, and still do, one of my dreams back then was to catch a salmon. As it happened I married Pams sister, Kim, and met the Garrett family. Steve took me fishing in his Boston Whaler, and I got to catch my first salmon. I think Steve was more excited then I was, that's the kind of guy he was.
That was a dream come true for me and thanks to Steve one of the many fun memory's I have of him. You will surely be missed my friend. Such a beautiful man. My thoughts are with you guys.

Mr. Garrett was my science teacher 15 years ago. He was, undoubtedly, one of the great teachers of our time - a gift to all his students. Mr. Garrett's humor, creativity, energy and compassion will live on through those blessed enough to be in his life and in his classroom. My gratitude to you, Mr. Garrett.

My daughter Justine Heston was so very lucky to have Mr. Garrett for science. She would come home with the funniest stories about him. He was a favorite of hers. Pam, sons, brother Chuck, and the Garrett family,
I felt sad when I learned that Steve had passed. During the 30+ years since I first met Steve, I always found him to be a warm, generous and bright man, with more zest for life than many folks put together. Most of all I remember his great sense of humor and contagious laugh. When I first played softball against Steve, and then when I had the great fortune to have him as a teammate for several years, he was not only a skilled athlete and competitor, but a guy who could goof around with thes best of them. I recall fondly some of his expressions, and his different hats. When I would run into Steve around Eureka he spoke proudly of Pam and his sons, and was already ready for a new adventure. I will keep him in my prayers, and offer my condolences to his family.

I have such fond memories of Mr. Garrett.. He was by far one of my favorite teachers. He had such a way about teaching, he could make any student interested. He was always so silly. One of my favorite memories is how he put teeth that he cut from construction paper on the top and bottom of the overhead projector mirror and every time he would open it to start a lesson he would go " roarrr!" Soooo funny:-) I feel so sad for his family, especially his boys... I couldn't imagine losing a parent. The world really has lost a good one...REST IN PEACE MR G

We were so sad to learn of Steve's passing, but know that he is now in a better place! He fought hard this past year with Pam always there for support. He was blessed to spend his final days at the home he loved with his family and close friends near. We had some fun times with Steve and Pam when visiting Katie in Arcata over the years. One special time was when we golfed with Steve and Pam at their Club in the pouring rain.........well.........we ended up eating some good food and having drinks in the bar because we Southern California golfers did not have the gear or "game" to hang in there like them. Way to go...he got in his HOLE IN ONE!
He was such fun and enjoyed life to the fullest . He shared his love of life with everyone.........and he will be missed by so many.
Our deepest sympathy to Pam, Matt, Andrew and the family and friends.

Pam, Matt and Andrew,
Yesterday, eight of us gathered at the Elk's Club to tell Steve Garrett stories and remininsce about what a wonderful man we have lost and how much he will be missed. He had so many special qualities but the one that I admired the most was his ability to make everyone smile. He had that twinkle in his eye and a gentle way about him that just made you feel comfortable. Our group "toasted" Steve several times and a lot of nice things were said about him. We all have our favorite memories of Steve from golf, softball, winemaking, teaching, coaching, etc. He touched a lot of lives.
Kathi and I send our deepest condolences and our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Pam - I met Steve several years ago when I became a new Baywood member and instantly felt welcomed by his friendly and fun nature. Having read a few of the guestbook entries, I am clear that this was his way - a great smile and witty word, a desire to work hard and play hard, and a lover or life. I raise a glass in his honor and will remember him fondly.

Pam,
Our heart goes out to you and the boys. We hope and trust that you will find the courage to make it through this difficult period. It was only last spring that we got reacquainted with you and Steve, of all things, over a bottle of wine in Ferndale. The waiter advised us it was from a small boutique winery named Old Growth Cellars. What a thrill to eventually find our way to your door and discover Steve's talent as a Science Teacher had escalated to being one of the finest winemakers in the state. We will think of your family often as we savor his most-excellent final vintage.

Like so many others, I was saddened to read this news today, and offer my condolences to the family. I will always remember Mr. Garrett as a fine science teacher and basketball coach. He inspired and mentored me to love both, to the exclusion of neither. Maybe in doing so he was the first to teach me what being a student-athlete was all about. He was loved and will be missed, but his infectious passion for life is a legacy that lives on in so many.
Aloha.

I never even had Mr. Garrett as a teacher but he made sure he knew me by name. And no, it wasn't because I was a bad kid. He was so friendly, funny, and nice. It was as if he just had to get to know all the students. I always wanted to take science with him but his classes were ALWAYS full. He was fun and a lot of us would hang around his classroom at breaks and lunch. He was loved by everyone.

I also Had Mr. Garret as a teacher about 20 years ago. There isn't alot I remember besides how he had taken his personal time (mostly during lunch) to help me out with my Science. You know, it's not often that I think about junior high school...two very short years in my comparably long life. But when an event such as this draws my mind to those years, memories rush back and flood my mind. Happily, all of those memories about Mr. Garrett are fond ones. Science was *always* my worst subject, but that man made it exciting! Maybe this is a corny memory that didn't ever happen, but does anyone remember "Fe-Girl" (iron maiden) when learning the periodic table of elements? Or how about finding your blind spot with a dot on a piece of paper? Exploding balloons filled with hydrogen? Or for those of us lucky enough to have gone to Great America for science day...didn't we somehow sneak in a few more people than we had tickets for? Wow...awesome memories!...happy memories that honor the educator that he was. Mr. Garrett was a great man who touched and inspired the lives of many. He leaves behind a legacy that will not soon fade. My condolences to his family, especially during this time of year. May peace be with you all...my thoughts are. -James R. Burger, Winship class of...huh...1991?

He was by far the most beloved teachers at Winship. An affirmation of such a claim is the fact that not one student ever turned him in for showing us the properties of acids by destroying U.S. currency (pennies and nickels). Yes, 20 years later, I still remember the awesomeness of that experiment.

I probably should wait to write this, since I am pretty emotional right now, but I want to thank Steve. Thank him for being my "science buddy" whose classroom was right behind mine. Thank him for pulling me through some hard days, as well as sharing in the (many more) wonderfully "feelin' good" ones. Thank him for ideas, example, and never failing support. Thank him even for scaring me with those explosions (outside) and worrying about those brown and curling old newspapers on his wall. Thank him for that twinkle and that unfailing energy. Thank him for teaching 8th grade so that I wouldn't be a disappointment to the kids, since I came before, not after him. Thank him for oh so many things. I love you, Mr. Garrett. May we keep on hearing you holler "Hoo-Hooo" for evermore.
My love and support to you, Pam, and the boys.

I had the privilege of working with Mr. Garrett for several years and during that time it wasn't uncommon to hear so many students say the same thing. Mr. Garrett is the best teacher. He took the time to get to know his students, and athletes. He saw the best in the kid, and helped so many see that for themselves. He was a great teacher and a great person. He is missed.

I was so saddened to see today's paper as I was not aware Steve was ill. I was a Resource teacher at Winship several years and only retired from the district this summer. Mr. Garret was my basketball coach at Winship Jr. High school when i was in 8th Grade , which i believe was 1990? !! LOL. A LONG time ago! He was a great coach ( my very favorite in fact) , But it wasnt his coaching i remember. It was his science class. I HATED science , and was terrible at it , and gave very little effort. Also i was probably the best player on the team that year! ( not to sound conceited right!? ;) ). He told us that if our grades slipped , we wouldnt play , and me being me , i called his bluff... AND... I DIDNT play! i was shocked! LOL. But that was the ONLY time that has ever happened to me..period. Other coaches like to " Help " their players so they can play sometimes. But Mr. Garret didnt believe in that. for some reason , that has really stuck with me all these yrears. Well , THAT ...and the fact that AMAZINGLY , i never held it against him. He was too likeable to hold anything against him! LOl. AND i learned a lesson that stayed with me. I NEVER got good grades in science , but i DID get passing ones after that! HAHAh Thanks Mr. Garret , you were very Someone that i will ALWAYS remember.

If this repeats, then I apologize.
Mr. Garrett was the most inspiring, memorable teacher in middle school. Although I had him 20 years ago, I still remember his excitement for science. I didn't like science until I had him for a teacher. Being a middle school teacher myself, I have gained even more respect for what Mr. Garrett did for his students. I only wish I could be as inspiring to my students as he was to me. He will truly be missed. My condolences go out to his family.
