David Theodore Boxer

David Boxer Obituary

died on February 12. His son Nate and brother Lew were with him. The cause of death was a progressive neurological condition called Lewy body dementia. He was 72 years old. David was born in Queens, New York, the second of three children. He headed west after graduating from Queens College and completed his PhD in English at the University of Washington. Travel was always a central part of David's life; his son Nate was born in Japan. During summers throughout his academic career at Humboldt State University he could be found visiting friends and relatives on the East Coast and in Europe. He spent Fulbright years in Szeged, Hungary; Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Bucharest, Romania. In 1988 he completed construction of his home in Bayside. A deeply gregarious person, David held dinners, barbeques, croquet and badminton matches, brunches and readings at his home. He tinkered constantly at the margins of his property, constructing paths, gardens and a treehouse. David leaves a large community of friends and loved ones here in Humboldt County, on the West Coast and internationally. He is survived by his son Nate and brother Lew, his first wife Julie, his companion of 11 years Susan and his second wife Lijun Lei. A celebration of his life is planned for the late spring. Please accept my sympathy for the departure of David, who was a colleague of mine for 40 years in Humboldt State University's English department. David was a fine teacher (as is suggested by all the kind words here from his students) with a great sense of humor. His humor was very special--definitely his own and not anybody else's. David's constant attempts to bring the department into line with others, battling against an entrenched old boys' network was beneficial to all--colleagues and students.

David was one of my first professors at HSU in the early 70's. He ignited a love of American Lit and I loved his sense of humor. One year he went to Spain with his family and I goat-sat, being shown where the food was kept and a rudimentary lesson on milking. What I learned later, after he left town, was that the mama goat had an infection and I had to take her to the vet...in the back of my '63 Plymouth. It was an adventure; he bought me a litre of fine cognac. One day he asked how I liked it, and I said it lasted one party. The look on his face was priceless...as was that bottle, evidently. He forgave me. He enhanced my intellectual life and shared his humor and laughter. Condolences to family and friends.

David and I became friends at age thirteen, attended the same high school and fraternity. We traveled to the west coast after college graduation and we kept in touch some sixty years.I am saddened by his loss and will always remember him with fondness

Oh my, how I will miss my funny friend of forty years. Somewhere, I have a photo of the two of us pretending to be Woody Allen and Diane Keaton. He lived his life creatively - lots of drama, lots of comedy. Looking forward to celebrating his life with all who loved and cared about him.

To the family of David Boxer:I first met David when I began teaching at HSU in 1987, and we were friends and colleagues until his retirement. Patrick and I will always remember David's gift of hospitality. Patrick was honored that David asked him to craft some tables to grace the beautiful home David built in Bayside. We send our deepest sympathy to you in this time of sorrow.
