Paul Augustine Obituary

Born November 3, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois to parents, Clarice Ratte and Paul A. Augustine. Paul had one sister Shirley Nadine McCartney and one brother Elmer Lawrence McCartney. Paul is survived by his loving wife Dr. Margaret Gordon Augustine, his two sons Douglas Paul Augustine (Keiko) of Tokyo Japan and Gregory James Augustine (Wynette) of Placentia, CA, three grand children, Naomi Augustine, Jason Lee Augustine (Amber), and Dallas Lee Augustine, and one great grandchild Cameron Riley Augustine. Paul had a very accomplished professional career, first as an engineer and then as an attorney. Paul attended Northwestern University from 1943-1945. His schooling was interrupted due to his military obligations with the United States Navy during WWII. After the Navy, Paul returned to Northwestern from 1946-48 where he graduated with a B.S .degree in Structural Engineering. Upon graduation he started his engineering career at the Fluor Corporation and then with the county of Los Angeles. He worked in this field from 1948 to 1956. Not content with being an engineer Paul took evening classes at UCLA from 1949-51 where he obtained a Masters Degree in Sociology. He then attended Loyola Law School again in the evening from 1951-55. In January of 1956 he took and passed the California Bar exam. Leaving his engineering career behind, he started practicing and specialized in criminal law from 1956-64. In July of 1964 his criminal law career was highlighted when Paul received the Award of Merit from the National Association of Defense Lawyers in Criminal Cases, a nationwide honor for his work on allowing non-violent offenders to be released on their own recognizance. To this date "Released on your Own Recognizance" is commonly used in the criminal justice system. In 1965 Paul shifted his practice from Criminal Law to Civil Law and started practicing in Orange County, CA. Paul continued in civil law until his retirement in 1996. In 1970 Paul met the love of his life, Dr. Margaret Gordon who lived in the same apartment complex. On October 5, 1974 Maggie and Paul were married at Angels Stadium. It was their mutual love of sports that helped bring them together so it was appropriate that they were married where they watched so many games. Paul's love of sports wasn't just as a spectator, but also one of a participant. He might have been short of stature but wasn't short on ability and boxed with many greats including sparing with Ezzard Charles, former World Heavy Weight Champion. Paul's accomplishments as a boxer allowed him to attend Northwestern on an athletic (boxing) scholarship. After his retirement in 1996, Paul and Maggie moved to Eureka where Paul could enjoy the fresh air and Maggie could continue in her medical career. Eureka and the surrounding area became a better place with them in the community. Paul and Maggie enjoyed and supported local performing arts. Many local organizations were blessed by their support. Maggie and Paul express gratitude for the excellent medical care provided by Dr. Beth Abels, Dr. Allen Mathew, Dr. Joachim Postel, Dr. Daniel Gehling and Dr. Nelson/Hospice of Humboldt County. Paul passed September 27, 2011 surrounded by his loving family and friends. He and his love of storytelling will be greatly missed by all. At Paul's request no formal services will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Eureka Chamber Music Series or North Coast Dance. Please sign the guest book at www.Times-Standard.com, click obits.

Paul was a great friend. He encouraged and took his time for everyone. Paul had a generous spirit to give to the community and the arts. Maggie and him always were positive lights and they always made my day when I had the opportunity to spend time with them. I will really miss Paul. Love you both, Maggie.

Maggie, I will really miss Paul. What a diverse productive life he lived. I bet he was a bulldog in the ring when young. He was always lively, smart, opinionated, and lovable, to me a really special guy. My deepest condolances.

Maggie, I am so sorry for your loss. Paul certainly lived a prolific and exemplary life. I always enjoyed talking about the arts with both of you when you came into the Red Lion. Paul's enthusiasm and gusto couldn't be stifled, with so many wonderful endeavors left in his wake. My condolences to you and your family.

I first met Paul when I worked for the Board of Supervisors, and he would attend meetings at times. Sometimes he would show up at my "coffee break" time and take me for a quick cup. He always praised my work, and he always encouraged me. I loved his support for the arts--especially North Coast Dance. The last time I saw him was at The Arkley on September 11 for the 10th observance of the terrorist attacks. I just can't believe that I won't see him at The Nutcracker this year. Joel and I will always miss him.

Aunt Maggie, I will miss Uncle Paul.

Thanks to Paul's generosity, my late wife, Deborah Clasquin, was able to arrange for at least three seperate world famous classical pianists to perform and give master classes at HSU's Fulkerson Recital Hall. These events grately enriched the educational experience of the HSU piano students as well as entertaining the community members who attended.
I recall that Deborah was very grateful to Paul for making it possible with a large generous gift. He was a great supporter of classical music in this community.
