Eric Freed Obituary

REVEREND ERIC FREED It is with profound sorrow that I inform you of the tragic death of Father Eric Freed that occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, January 1, 2014 in the rectory of St. Bernard's parish, Eureka. The media and other means of social communications have kept people informed as to the nature of his tragic death. Father Freed was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan to Eugene and Laura Freed. He was raised in Covina, California and graduated from Northview High School in the summer of 1975. He attended Loyola Marymount University, Los Angeles where he graduated with a B.A. in Philosophy. In the summer of 1979 he entered the Salesian Religious Congregation in Japan where he pursued his studies to the priesthood in the Salesian House of Formation, Jocti, Japan. He completed his studies in Theology at the Pontifical Salesian University, Turin, Italy from 1988-1990. On September 23, 1990 he was ordained to the Priesthood in Tokyo, Japan, by Archbishop Peiro Shirayanagi Seiichi for ministry as a Salesian priest. He ministered in Salesian High Schools as a teacher and chaplain in Ikuei Kosen, Tokyo 1990-1995 and Seikosakiun, Osoka, 1995-1999. Father Freed came to the Diocese of Santa Rosa on April 1, 1999 and served as Parochial Vicar at St. Joseph, Cotati until August, 2001, with a two month assignment at St. Francis Solano, Sonoma in the summer of 1999. On August 28, 2001, he was appointed Administrator of St. Mary's, Arcata where he ministered for one year. From August 15, 2002 until the summer of 2005 he was the Chaplain at St. Francis High School, Mountain View, California. Upon his return to the Diocese of Santa Rosa he was assigned as Chaplain at St. Vincent de Paul High School, Petaluma, and was in residence at St. James, Petaluma. In March of 2006 he was assigned as the Chaplain to the Newman Center for Humboldt State University, Arcata, and at the same time ministered as the Parochial Vicar at St. Bernard's, Eureka. Father Freed also taught Religious Studies at Humboldt State University, a course which was well received by the students. Father Freed ministered to the Japanese Catholic Community in San Francisco and Santa Clara County. He wrote the story of a Hiroshima bombing survivor who related her experience in the book titled "The Experience of the Atomic Bombing of Hiroshima in Poem." On January 10, 2001, he was appointed Pastor of St. Bernard's parish, Eureka and served in that office until his untimely death on New Year's Day, January 1, 2014. Father Eric is survived by his father Eugene Freed and his stepmother, Donna and by his brother Will, sisters, Kari, Lisa, Anita and Melissa who live in various parts of the United States. He was preceded in death by his mother, Laura and two brothers, Gene and Michael. He is mourned not only by his own family but his spiritual family as well, especially by those he served in Japan as a Salesian High School teacher, by the Japanese Community of the Bay Area and by the parishioners he served in the various parishes here in the Diocese of Santa Rosa particularly the parishioners of St. Bernard's parish, Eureka. Father Freed was a compassionate, giving priest with a ready smile, a good sense of humor and he was a sports fanatic. Echoing the words of Jesus to the blind man Bartimeus - "What do you want me to do for you" was how Father Eric lived his priestly life and ministry. He will be greatly missed. May he rest in peace. Letters of condolence may be sent to the Chancery and will be forwarded to the family. Memorial contributions can be sent to the Chancery for the benefit of Humboldt State University Newman Center, Arcata, California. I still remember and think of Father Eric and his work at Saint Francis Solano school in Sonoma and his playground basketball with the kids and then later at St Joseph´s church in Cotati where he
encouraged me to continue RCIA studies.

We need you Father Freed. You were a wonderful priest.
You were clear with your messages and we always left church having learned from you. My mom and I were in church the sunday they found you. Such evil in this world to take a good person like you. Look down on us from heaven and help us

I love you and and still miss you very much. Some of us got together on New Year's Eve after mass to converse, share a meal, and to be of good cheer in your memory. You will not be forgotten.

January 2, 2015

You will not be forgotten. We pray for you, and ask that you pray for all of us. Your Wednesday meetings are still an empty space in the weekly plan. The church just had a dinner and get-together in your honor, and you know, of course, it was packed-"a sellout", including eating, drinking, games, and yes, football on the big screen.
We hope to see you again, someday. Rest in the Peace of God, Fr. Eric!

DEAR REVEREND FATHER ERIC FREED,
I KNOW YOU CAN HEAR ME, THOUGH WE'VE NEVER MET. PLEASE KNOW THIS, WHAT GREATER EXAMPLE OF 'TRUE LOVE' THAN THAT OF OUR MARTYRED SAINTS, AND, ABOVE ALL ELSE THE DIVINE SACRIFICE OF JESUS CHRIST, SON OF GOD!
YOUR BLESSED EXAMPLE OF SACRIFICE CAN BE COMPARED TO A MODERN DAY SAINT. YOUR WORK WILL CONTINUE..HOW COULD IT NOT? WE ARE SOLDIERS OF CHRIST, AND ARE NOW PAYING CLOSER ATTENTION BECAUSE OF YOU, DEAR REVEREND FATHER ERIC FREED..YOU ARE MORE 'ALIVE' NOW THAN EVER!
I THANK GOD FOR YOUR BIRTH. YOU HAVE LEFT US WITH NEW LESSONS. AS WE REFLECT ON YOUR LIFE AND TIMES, WE ARE REMINDED AND CAN HEAR YOUR SOUL SPEAK !
THANK YOU !

Fr. Freed is one of the finest priests I have ever met. While he was at Notre Dame de Namur University,he and I led a bible study group with some students and I was amazed at his knowledge of scripture and how he related it to our lives. His generosity, his love for people and his faith showed through his contact with everyone. He is a tragic loss to us and to the church. He was our translator for our Japanese sisters during our 2008 General Chapter and was to do that again next summer. Our Sisters in Japan and in California will miss him terribly. It is a grace to have known him. Sr. Roseanne

Fr. Eric once told me, "Now it is your opportunity to step courageously into your future to become the person God wants you to be, to be of influence for good in the lives of many who will depend on your friendship and love. 1 John 3:18 My children, our love should not be just words and talk; it must be true love, which shows itself in action."
Fr. Eric was more than just my priest... more than just a friend... he was my family. He always encouraged me to give unto others my all, help in all situation happy or sad, act on my love for them don't just tell them. He would always greet me with a hug (when he hugged you, you knew he meant it, such a comforting warm embrace) and a smile and would never hesitate to ask how I was doing.
So I send love, I send hugs... I send warm wishes and prayers of comfort to his father, step-mother and siblings... though you don't know many of us, you are our family too. Eric was a truely blessed man, and he loved you all very much.
All my love and prayers,
~Katie

Fr. Eric was truly the hands of Jesus to so many. Reading all of messages here brings me joy. Joy that this broken world was loved so well by Eric and his faith in God's redemption and grace.
My tears fall with sadness for the loss of Eric too! We went from kindergarten to high school graduation together. He was energetic and I can hear his contagious laugh in my memories of him at this time.
May God's promise of the ressurection carry the tearful hearts of Eric's family as well as all of those who have been fortunate to to know and love him in this world.
Looking forward to seeing Eric in the company of heaven!

We will always be reminded of Father Eric as we wake each morning to see the beautiful katakana of our names that he drew for us some 12 years ago. We also will treasure the meals that we shared at the Newman Center (including his special Japanese hot-pot menus), joking about his guilty pleasure watching The Simpsons, going to see SPAMALOT together and most of all, learning so much from his homilies and amazing Bible studies. He was an incredibly gifted man and we will miss him terribly. A man of peace, he signed his translation of the Hiroshima victim's book for us with: May all our "nuking" only be done in the kitchen. Let's honor Father Eric by being a light for others.

Fr. Freed was amiable, smart, generous, patient, understanding, and humorous - in short, he was a true gentleman. He was indeed a great sheperd who brought many souls to Christ, and with his strength carried the weight of more than the congregation on his shoulders. He loved so many people, and that affection was returned tenfold to him. He was truly good, and will be much missed not only as my Priest, teacher, and friend, but as a man who encouraged hope and faith among the world. There is no doubt, he's in Heaven now speaking to Christ, and looking down upon us with a smile, and will continue to give, and be our intercessor throughout life. God Bless you Fr. Eric, it was a privilege to know you, and call you friend. I won't say goodbye, but will see you in time. Rest peacefully, your good work here continues.

Jerry/Tamara Struck

January 5, 2014

The Struck family is heartbroken over the tragic loss of a our beloved step-brother. As we mourn this great loss, my husband(Jerry) was recounting one of his favorite stories from their college years, when in 1977 Jerry attended a baseball camp at Loyola Marymount and Eric let him sleep in his dorm, snuck food to him from the commons, then shot hoops late into the night in the 'closed' gymnasium, all while doing what they did best, talk sports. As many miles kept them/us apart, we consider ourselves fortunate to have visited with him every time he was in town & always had a lot of laughs. He was a genuine, casual, fun-loving, kind, caring & compassionate brother who will be sorely missed by all. Our condolences to his dad Gene, step-mom Donna, the Freed siblings, Strucks, and much more extended family, as well as friends and every person fortunate to have connected with Eric. Rest in Peace!

To Eugene, Donna, Will, Kari, Lisa, Anita and Melissa, I was indeed privileged to have had Eric as a friend and pastor for the last three years or so. He had a special twinkle in his eye, and a bit of a mischievous smile when he would include infrequent 'snippets from home' during his homilies. Thank you for sharing him with us. May the memories of his efforts be your connection to the peace he wished for all. "Our ticket into the Kingdom is Joy and Holiness, so be Holy, and be Joyous".
