Kirk Sandmeier Obituary

Kirk Andrew Sandmeier (54) was born in Muncie, Indiana on Jan. 5, 1961. He lived in Indiana until he was seven, when he moved to Longmont, Colorado with his parents, the late Dr. John Sandmeier and Kay Sandmeier-Broderius. Kirk attended Longmont schools and moved to Ogden, Utah after graduation, where he married Karen Vail and adopted his son, Andrew Sandmeier. He attended Weber State University, majoring in Engineering and worked as a draftsman. After the death of his wife in 1998, he and Andrew moved back to Longmont where his son graduated from Longmont High. Illness prevented Kirk from working and his son and daughter-in-law continued to lovingly care for Kirk until his death on May 10th, 2015. His wife, Karen, his father John, and his grandparents Rev. Andrew and Mabel Craig precede him in death. He is survived by his son, Andrew, and daughter in law Ariel, his mother Kay Sandmeier-Broderius of Greeley, two sisters, Kathy Sandmeier of Boulder, WY; and Heidi Sandmeier Joyner (Cliff) and two nieces, Carmelle and Cassidy of Clayton, NC. There will be a private service held at a later date. Cremation entrusted to Carroll-Lewellen Funeral & Cremation Services. The family asks that any remembrance be made through the American Diabetes Association.

I just heard about Kirk. Although I have had little contact with him in the past 35 years, he was at one time the best friend I had. We were classmates together starting at Central school through junior and high school. One of my fondest memories was one starlit evening when we were about 13 years old. We found ourselves laying on the grass at sunset golf course where we both lived near, looking at all the stars and discussing the finer points of the TV series Star Trek. I hated to admit it at the time, but he knew more about the physics of space then I did. I think about how you can miss a friend you haven't seen or heard from in over 35 years. Well, hearing that Kirk has passed I can honestly say I will miss him. But my memories of talking about flying and space will live on. Godspeed my long lost friend. Now you can really travel at 186,000 miles per second!
