Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 6, 2011.
Mr. Donald Eugene Whitaker, 82, of Tuscumbia, left this world to dwell in the house of his Lord on March 4, 2011, at his residence, surrounded by his family after a brave battle with cancer.
He was a loving husband of 59 years, a faithful man, teacher of life to his children, an inventor and problem solver and a positive influence to all who knew and loved him.
Mr. Whitaker was a member of the First Baptist Church, of Tuscumbia. He grew up in Indiana. He served in the Korean War. After the war, he entered the welding industry and eventually became the general manager of a large corporation, retiring in 1983.
Mr. Whitaker was preceded in death by his mother, Lois V. Price; father, Charles G. Whitaker; brother, Charles R. Whitaker; and sister, Judith Key.
His memory will live forever in the hearts of his family, including his wife, Betty Miller Whitaker; son, Michael Whitaker (Laurie), of Tuscumbia; daughters, Peggy Beckworth (William), of Georgia and Pamela Cornelison (Pat), of Indiana; brothers, William Whitaker (Wanda), of California, James Whitaker (Lois), of Indiana, and Wayne Whitaker (Sherry), of Florida; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be noon until 2 p.m. Monday, March 7, 2011, at Morrison Funeral Home, of Tuscumbia. The service will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, with the Rev. Eugene Digby officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. at Dempsey Cemetery.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Hospice of North Alabama, with a special thank you to Kelly Jo and Ashlee for their wonderful care and love during Mr. Whitaker's last days.

Betty June, Dick just called me at work a few minutes ago to tell me about Don. I immediately thought how much fun it was to go to your home in Brown County, go mushroom hunting and just hang out. Troy and Matthew also have such fond memories of both of you and visiting you and your mom and dad at the lake. Don was such a great guy, always with a humorous slant on everything. I know you'll miss him terribly and we are so sorry for your loss.
Our love and greatest sympathy, Deb, Dick and family

Our deepest condolences to Mrs. Whitaker and her family during this time. During my father's last few years Mr. & Mrs. Whitaker were frequent visitors and their friendship meant so much to our family. We will miss him. The Hacker Family
