Mary Hitckcock Obituary

Published by Vincent Funeral Home - Providence Forge on Jul. 6, 2010.
HITCHCOCK, Mary Elizabeth Long, 65, of Providence Forge, Va., died July 4, 2010 at MCV. Born March 7, 1945 to Byrd Wesley Long and Elizabeth Kincannon Long, she grew up in Louisa County, Va. and attended Longwood College. She received her Master of Science degree in education from Virginia Commonwealth University and spent 32 years working with special education students in the Richmond Public School System, serving as a teacher, diagnostician and school administrator. Mary not only loved her children, but she believed strongly in service to mankind. She served as governor and as international director of LaSertoma Clubs, an international service organization. She was a member of St. Peter's Parish Church in New Kent, Va., where she served on the altar guild. Her favorite pastime was sport fishing on the river or bay with her husband and family. Mary is survived by her husband, Larry Nelson Hitchcock; her son, Samuel Byrd Guinn, currently serving in the military in Iraq; her daughter, Melanie Guinn Hitchcock and husband, Paul; grandson, Cole Alan Hitchcock of Quinton, Va.; a sister, Janie Long Ritchie and husband, Joe; and three nieces of Harrisonburg, Va. The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 8, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Vincent Funeral Home, 9923 Pocahontas Trail, Providence Forge, Va. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, July 9, 2010, at St. Peter's Parish Church, 8400 St. Peter's Lane, New Kent, Va., 23124. Interment will follow at 3:30 p.m. in Hillcrest Cemetery, Louisa, Va. The family suggests, that in lieu of flowers, contributions in her honor be made to St. Peter's Parish Church, New Kent, Va., or Emmaus Baptist Church, P.O. Box 533, Quinton, Va., 23141. Tributes may be posted at www.vincentfh.com.

I learned of Mary's death late (Nov '10). She was like a mother to me and helped me much thru my first pregnancy. Turned out I had a disabled daughter and her experience in this field was of great assistance to me. Her daughter, Melanie, showed my horses with me and Sam was a great buddy as well. I can't believe he's in the military. I miss Mary. She was definitely one of a kind.

She was such a good woman, I didn't know her very well but the little time I seen her I knew she was a very loved person. I will miss seeing her at the store, N & W. She was always so caring. She will be missed.

Miss Mary was the best neighbor we could have at Bush Park campground, Deltaville, VA. We will miss her smiling face and all her hard work with the flowers and keeping Larry happy with all of her swift housekeeping and cooking. She loved to fish and Larry had her fishing every weekend that was possible.

We love you,
