Catesby Graham Jones Jr.

JONES, Catesby Graham Jr., 84, of Gloucester, died at his home on the York River Thursday, December 10. He served as the Gloucester County Commonwealth's Attorney from 1963 to 1975 and is a former Commissioner of Accounts. He practiced law in the county from 1951 until this year. Mr. Jones was born in Gloucester and graduated from Botetourt School. He attended the University of Richmond, where he was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. He was drafted into the Army in the midst of his sophomore year. During World War II, he served overseas as a Private 1st Class, Company C, in the Medical Battalion in Europe. After the war, he went to The University of Virginia, where he received both his undergraduate and law degrees. He was a member and past president of the 13th Judicial Circuit Bar Association. Other affiliations included the Thomas Nelson Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, the Gloucester Forestry Club, the American Legion and Ware Episcopal Church. He is survived by his sister, Mary Montague Jones Stephens of Newport News; a son, Catesby B. Jones of Gloucester; a daughter, Latane Jones Avery of Norfolk; and three grandchildren, Catesby Ap Baytop Jones, Cabell W. Jones and Anne Spotswood Avery. He was preceded in death by his wife, Spotswood Hunnicutt Jones; and his parents, the Honorable Judge Catesby Graham Jones and Rosa Folkes Jones. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be given in his name to Walter Reed Birthplace Endowment Fund, c/o Gloucester Community Foundation, P.O. Box 2303 Gloucester, Va. 23061. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Ware Episcopal Church in Gloucester. Andrews Funeral Home, Gloucester, Va., is handling the arrangements.
