Willard Alvin Spaid, Jr., 77 of Stephens City, VA, passed away on Friday, September 19, 2025, at Westminster Canterbury under the care of Blue Ridge Hospice.
Chuck was born in 1948 in Winchester and was the only child of the late Willard A. Spaid, Sr. and Mildred Sargent Spaid. He was a graduate of Handley High School in 1966 where he received many awards and honors including the first Winchester Evening Star Basketball Player of the Year. While at Handley, Chuck was a three-star athlete (lettering in football, basketball, and track), was voted most athletic by his fellow classmates, and was later inducted into the Hunter Maddox Hall of Fame. He went on to earn his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Virginia in 1970 where he also played basketball and was an intramural track champion. Chuck was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at UVA and also served as the vice president and rush chairman.
Before moving back to Winchester, Chuck was an Albemarle County Public Schools teacher outside of Charlottesville, Virginia, teaching both special education and gifted children. In December of 1972, he moved back to Winchester to take over and own Snag's Sports Shop from 1973-1984. Chuck also worked as a magistrate for the Supreme Court of Virginia for five years, making probable cause decisions involving criminal offenses, issued warrants of arrest, bail determinations, and issued temporary civil mental detention orders.
He worked for 20 years as a Commonwealth of Virginia Probation/Parole Officer, working in offices in both Winchester and Woodstock. He then went to work for Homeland Security and later worked as a contractor for the FBI until retiring in 2012. His job included conducting criminal background record checks working as an adjudicator. Chuck was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a member of the Winchester Moose Lodge #1283 since 1979. Chuck enjoyed reading, gardening, canning, watching cooking shows, and he was a major sports enthusiast. He loved UVA athletic events and especially enjoyed watching college football and basketball. He was a Little League basketball coach, and was also a basketball coach and track official at Powhatan School in Boyce, Virginia.
Chuck was also very involved in volunteering. He provided counseling for victims of sexual abuse from 1988-2008, was a board member on the Winchester Council on Domestic Violence from 1998-2000, President of the Board of the Winchester Exchange Child - Parent Center from 1998-1999 and a board member from 1997-1998, and served on the Board for the University of Virginia Student Aid Foundation from 1979 -1984.
Above all, Chuck had a great sense of humor. He loved to make others laugh and did so often. He was known for telling funny stories, wearing ridiculous articles of clothing, engaging in comedic gestures, and always having a witty response.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Beverly "Ann" whom he dated since age 13 and then married on August 23, 1969, daughter, Elizabeth Spaid Fout (Michael), son, Barry Christopher Spaid; grandchildren, Ryan Fout, Danielle Neff, Katherine Fout, Lauren Fout, Madelynne Spaid and Brycen Spaid; and many loving great-grandchildren, cousins, and dear friends.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at 12pm with a service to be conducted at 1:30pm, all held at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Interment will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery following the service.
