Born in Brooklyn, NY, Bill was the eldest son of the late William and Eunice McDermott of Charlottesville. His first wife, Ellen Elizabeth Southall of Charlottesville, predeceased him. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Janet Miska Maupin of Rochelle.
Bill graduated from Bethpage High School (NY) in 1964 and completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at the University of Virginia. Bill dedicated more than 20 years of his life to friends and colleagues at UVA and its Curry School of Education.
Bill served on the Boards of Directors of Madison County Habitat for Humanity and the Rochelle Ruritan Club. He was also a member of the Lewis & Clark Exploratory Center, an active Disaster Relief Volunteer for the Red Cross, and 13-gallon blood donor to the
American Red Cross. Bill was a member of St. Isidore the Farmer Catholic Church in Orange, VA.
Bill will be remembered for his commitment to living life to the fullest, as well as for his generosity, love of travel, volunteer work, and for making every person feel seen and valued. His laughter, fun stories, and kindness will remain forever in the hearts of his family and friends.
Beloved survivors include his four younger brothers: Paul (Adrienne) of Boca Raton, FL; Gregory (Doreen) of Henderson, NV; Neal (Maria) of Herndon, VA; Arthur (Scott T. Dennis) of Marseillan, France; and sister-in-law, Lee Southall Boisseau (Benjamin) of Petersburg, VA.
Bill is also survived by his chosen children: Christina Maupin of Waynesboro, VA; Jaime Maupin Petralia and her children Oliver and Violet of Charlottesville, VA; niece Shane Leigh McDermott Enea (John) of Cortlandt Manor, NY; and nephews Scott McDermott (Kimberly) of Lake Worth, FL; Andrew McDermott (Ashley) of Olney, MD; Samuel Boisseau of Chesterfield, VA; and Matthew Boisseau (Leigh Anne) of Colonial Heights, VA.
A Mass will be celebrated on Friday, March 13, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Waynesboro, VA. Family and friends will gather to celebrate Bill's life on the first anniversary of his passing.
In lieu of flowers, Bill requested blood donations or charitable gifts be made to the
American Red Cross.
