Catherine Gill Obituary

GILL, Catherine Mary McLoughlin, of Blacksburg, Va., formerly of Colonial Heights, Va. and Easley, S.C., passed away on September 22, 2010. She was born in New York on February 27, 1920 to Daniel and Catherine Lavin McLoughlin. A veteran of the U. S. Army, she served overseas as a second lieutenant in the medical department during WWII. While in the military, she met and married the love of her life at St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome. Her husband, Lt. Col. Mark J. Gill, her parents, and her sister, Eileen McLoughlin, preceded her in death. Kaye is survived by her daughter, Michelle Embrey of St. Joseph, Missouri and her sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Maureen Gill of Chantilly, Va.; Richard and Kay Gill of Annandale, Va.; and Jerry and Elaine Gill of Christiansburg, Va. She is survived by nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Toni and Chance Embrey of St. Joseph, Mo.; Mark Embrey of Nebraska; Ryan Gill of Santa Monica, Calif.; Brandon, Julie and Colby Gill of Radford, Va.; Lauren Gill of Williamsburg, Va.; Michael Gill of Baltimore, Md.; Katie Gill of Radford, Va.; Elizabeth Gill of Annandale, Va.; and Nick Gill of Christiansburg, Va. Her sisters and brother-in-law, Peggy Cavanagh, Betty and Charlie Kalinowski, as well as her brother, Danny McLoughlin, all of Long Island, N.Y., also survive her. Many nieces and nephews also survive. She resided at Showalter Center of Warm Hearth Village in Blacksburg, Va. for the past 14 years. Her aide, Anita Sawyers, as well as many dedicated and compassionate staff members at the Center cared for her during the last years of her life. A funeral service with military honors will be held on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at 10 a.m. in Arlington National Cemetery. Those wishing to attend the service should arrive at the Administration Building at Arlington National Cemetery no later than 9:15 a.m. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National D-Day Memorial Foundation, P.O. Box 77, Bedford, Va. 24523. McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg, Va. is serving the family.
