I remember you from coming into Long John Silver when I worked there.You and your wife would come in ordering battered shrimp dinner, three piece fish dinner,medium tea,and medium diet coke...I was 18 and I am now 41. You would leave me a picture and I have so many.You were a blessing to so many and I just want to say thank you.You were an angel here on earth and now you are above with our Lord. I know God has said well done and I too say it and believe it...a job well done...God speed.Rest in peace.I feel blessed knowing you...you kept me believing that there is some good out there and the Lord God has angels here on earth you were one Sgt.Santa and now you are home...You will be missed but you will live on through stories told about you. I know I have told my daughter about you just about every Christmas and other times of the year also...it keeps her believing too...thank you again...you were and are an inspiration.

Dalton was my father's (Claude Duling) first cousin. When my mother died in 1997, my daughter, who was in college in South Carolina, came home with her boyfriend. On the way to the funeral home the night before the service, I told the boyfriend "Do not be surprised if you see Santa." I am sure he thought I was hystrical. However, you should have seen his face when Dalton walked in in his red sportcoat. It lighted a sad evening. God Bless you Tanya and Darrin. My thoughts are with you.

This morning I posted an entry in Sgt. Santa's Guest Book. I now feel lead of the Lord to continue his mission through my current ministry "Helping Hands" which already helps people is a simular way as Sgt. Santa did. In 2004, I ask Sgt. Santa to pray with me as I was beginning this ministry for the Lord, and he did. He also helped me in many ways to minister to the people of Richmond and the surrounding areas. I will continue to minister to the neighborhoods, and I have decided to dedicate the work to my beloved friend (Sgt. Santa). I will miss him greatly , but the work he so greatly loved to do will continue as long as I am able to do so. If anyone wishes to contact me for more information please feel free free to do so at : 804-929-8945 or 804-683-7098.

I will always remember talking with Sergeant Santa at the Virginia Christmas show. It did not matter if you were grown, he knew at Christmas we are all children at heart. He was so proud that his beard was real, said to pull it if we needed to test it! We'll miss you, Sgt Santa. I know you are rejoicing in heaven. "For as much as you have done it for the least of these, my brethern, you have done it for me." I believe there are angels among us.

The Virginia Farm Bureau family will sorely miss Sgt. Santa as he came over to the Home Office to collect the toys, for the underprivileged children, the employees put under the Christmas Tree in the Atrium every year after the tree was put up. He would come over and visit around the first to second week of December and visit with the employees in the Atrium and have pictures taken with the employees along with a serving of hot chocolate and donuts. After that the toys would be packed up and put in his "Santa Mobile" and taken to his shop along with the rest of the toys that had been collected. We will miss Sgt. Santa as he was such a loving and special, sweet person. I certainly will miss him as he has been a friend to me for many years through the Richmond Police Department and my fiancee, Otis (Buddy) McKay. Rest in peace my beloved friend. Our thoughts, prayers and sympathies go out to the family(s) and relatives of this wonderful and caring person, Sgt. Santa.

August 24, 2010

When my son was in his last year of day care, he was told there was no Santa - a short time later I went with a friend to the old Julian's on Broad St, and there sat Sgt Santa - I told him what had happened , and he gave me his Sgt. Santa photograph for my son - we framed it, and sat it on the hearth with the plate of crumbs from Santa's cookies that Christmas, and renewed my child's Christmas spirit. We still put that picture out every year - Mr. Duling truly lived the Spirit of giving of yourself not only at Christmas, but all year - my son is now an adult, and this memory is a gift I will always hold dear - with much admiration from a true believer in Naples, Florida

Lord, Sgt. Santa's work here on Earth is done. We know he is there in Heaven, probably looking to help someone. Our hearts are breaking because we miss him so much. He not only gave gifts to children, but he gave to each of us the most precious gifts of Love, Hope and Trust. Oh, how we loved to see him peep over his glasses and wink and smile; then he'd give you a strong hand shake or a bear hug, knowing that it would last awhile. He was the Love Ambassador of the City of Richmond, Va. day after day. May you rest in peace, Sgt. Santa, and we thank you for showing us God's way.

To Tanya, Darrin, and family,

Sgt. Santa touched all our lives. He was a giving and thoughtful man. He is soaring with the angels, and no doubt sharing his talent of making everyone feel just as wonderful in heaven.He touched so many people and left them with a feeling of "hope".
He will remain in our hearts forever, and you are in our thoughts and prayers during your time of sorrow.

God bless each of you.

August 23, 2010

Dear Duling Family, We all grew up knowing Frank and Ricky. My Grandfather, Ligh Park Yipp and Grandmother knew them well during the Oriental Restaurant days and they are very much loved. I heard of Ricky's passing from my mother Louise Ligh and father Gordon Ligh, both are 88 years old and so very sad.
My mother is wheel chair bound but wanted me to remember whenever our relatives had passed away, Frank and Ricky always paid their respects and they were there for her. She is unable to write and asked that I somehow get word to the children and Frank how deeply we shall miss him but will always keep the wonderful memories of him alive with us.

So, it went like this. I was assigned to escort Sergeant Santa through a rough neighborhood. He gave me some small chocolate candy to chew on. I noticed that some teens reappeared in his line for the second time. I whispered that fact to him. He smiled, "It's ok, RB, don't worry about it." When they reappeared for the third time, I cautioned him. Again, he admonished me to not worry about it. He KNEW they were doing it; it was part of being Santa and his BIG HEART had no problems with it. And...we never ran out of stuff to give out.
Now, the second problem came when the chocolate candy made me woosy. "Say, Sarge, what's in this candy anyway?"
"Oh, they're called Bourbon balls," he said with his eyes twinkling.
All of my children, including my crippled son Andy sat on Sgt. Santa's lap for a photo over the years. Not too many years ago, my granddaughter (and the granddaughter of Mongo McMahon) also sat on the Sarge's lap for a photo op.
I can tell you this much. My son Andy was there to greet Sgt. Santa and Andy is no longer in a wheel chair; but Sarge got a big hug; I am sure of that!
Rest well, Sarge, we will carry on for you but Christmas will never be the same. I've been crying all day.

Ricky will always be Sgt. Santa to many of the kids of Richmond. I will always remember him.

August 23, 2010

Sergeant Santa came to visit my daughter when she was in the ICU at MCV in 1989. He offered to replace the high school ring that was lost.
He always did for others, and he never met a stranger. I am a travel
agent, and I did fun raisers to sent him and his wife on a much deserved cruise. So glad, they had a wonderful time. I have pictures
of him with myself, my children and grandson. I will never forget him.
Sgt. Santa was one of a kind, and I know God has a special place for
him in heaven. My thoughts & prayers to his family. Jo Via (Mechanicsville, Va)

Deepest sympathy to the family.

What a fine man Sergeant Santa was. What a terrific and consistent role model Sergeant Santa was. Here was a man who kept the spirit of Christmas all year. In a world of tabloids, Richmond was privileged to have such a kind and giving man.

Christmas life will never be the same without Ricky to fill the shoes of Santa. He was a prince among men and dedicated to the public good in his service to the Richmond City community. Herbert and I have been going to the Christmas Show at the Showplace for over ten years now and have always been met by Sgt. Santa with a big smile. We always sat on his lap every year to have our picture taken with him. We learned to love and to respect him and the Showplace will not be the same without him. He is now with his God and has left us with so many wonderful memories. We need to always keep in our hearts all he stood for. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and many friends.

August 23, 2010

Sargeant Santa will live in the hearts of many for years to come. I will never forget when he came to my wifes office Christmas party back in the late 80's to pick up the toys that they had collected. My son was 6 mos old and Santa held him; to this day he loves everything about Christmas, even listening to Holiday music throughout the year...I can't help but wonder as to the affect he had on my son. A truly Great Human Being. Rest in Peace.

I did not know Sargent Santa, however when I ran into him, I could not help but say to him... "I was told when I was a young child how Santa was not real". I said, after seeing you, everything my parents' had told me was wrong. Seeing him in person, I now know Santa does exist.

In turn, he gave me a photo of himself signed; Sargent Santa. AND I still have it...

Thank you Sargent Santa in allowing us to believe again as you are truly a Richmond Legend. When I think of Christmas, I will think of you.

So it is time for you to go now Santa, as your Sleigh is awaiting to take you home. GOD Bless the Duling Family

Sgt. Santa will be missed by all those that had the priviledge to have met him, hear him laugh or spoke to him about a special person that needed help. I was fortunate enough to have met him and his sleigh (car) with that famous license plate at the Children's Hospital in 1992. He was music to my ears and a angel to my eyes. You are the Knight in Shiny Armor from the fairy-tales for the underprivileged children. I lived on Oregon Hill when I was younger, and I remember hearing your siren and start running, all the kids in the neighborhood would come running like they do for the ice cream man. But to me it was much more than that. Not only was it the teddy bear or the doll, but it was the true kindness, the affection and love that came from your heart and soul. You were not just a person doing a good deed, You really cared and I felt it. I fortunately came from a large loving family, but some of my friends back then were abused and came from homes that it was obvious they were not wanted, Sgt. Santa, Mr. Duling gave them hope, that there are loving, giving people in the world. All of us in the neighborhood had seen the police on many occasions, arresting a fellow neighbor or friend, barging into our homes looking for someone, this was a welcome change for the children he taught us not to be afraid of the police that they were there to help, and it made things easier for a lot of us kids that were just caught up in the middle of something we didn't understand. May you rest in peace, and my heart goes out to your family in blood and in relationships that you created. I for one feel like I was a part of your family in some capacity. I am grown now with a family of my own, but I will always remember you SGT. Santa for you never made me feel unwelcome, or frown on me for being underprivileged, you put love and hope in my heart. GOD BLESS YOU. Thank you for All the fond memories that I will NEVER forget. Although you will continue your goodness and be as busy as ever for now you can help those in need in a different way. It is nice to know that I have you as my Guardian Angel..

I had the pleasure of meeting Sargent Santa several years ago, when I was a new nurse. I was taking care of his very elderly mother in law. He was "just" a family member that day. His caring and concern for her was touching. It was later I found out who he was....it didn't surprise me. As a little girl, I grew up hearing stories of "Santa" watching us all the time.......I got tickled at the thought of him "watching me" that night. I will remember him always...and share his memory with MY children.

You taught the children not to be afraid of the Police. You always brought happiness to everyone with a smile or a kind word. You symbolized what life is about-helping others and living every day to the fullest. Every day was Christmas for you. Thank you for all of the lives that you touched and the difference you made. A Reminiscence

YES, thou art gone! and never more
Thy sunny smile shall gladden me;
But I may pass the old church door,
And pace the floor that covers thee.

May stand upon the cold, damp stone,
And think that, frozen, lies below
The lightest heart that I have known,
The kindest I shall ever know.

Yet, though I cannot see thee more,
'Tis still a comfort to have seen;
And though thy transient life is o'er,
'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;

To think a soul so near divine,
Within a form so angel fair,
United to a heart like thine,
Has gladdened once our humble sphere.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Sergeant Santa was very special to our family. He visited the Twins Club (Mothers of Multiples) Christmas parties for many years back in the 70's and 80's, and I cherish pictures of him with my three sons including twin sons, now 31.

I always sought him to leave a cash donation at the various bazaars where he volunteered his time and collected money to help the children of Richmond have a happy Christmas when many of them would not have had anything.

I considered him a special friend and will miss him a great deal. He surely was a dedicated and giving person. His family members rightfully should be very proud of what a wonderful person he was.
