Ethel Horst Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Apr. 27, 2010.
HORST, Mrs. Ethel Louise, received the beckoning call to come home to be with the Lord and the love of her life, Bob, on April 22, 2010. Ethel was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Robert Dillon Horst; and is survived by her two sisters, Peggy Dreshman of Munhall, Pa., and Virginia Wilson of Farmville, Ohio, her three children, Bradley Horst of Austin, Texas, David Horst of Richmond, Va., and Donald and Susie Horst of Livermore, Calif.; as well as seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. All that knew her will remember her for her lifetime of giving. The love that she gave to her family is evident in and is passed to her children, grandchildren and their offspring. She was frequently involved in volunteerism while raising her family in New Orleans through schools and local hospitals. After retirement to Raleigh, N.C., she became involved in many volunteer organizations and received multiple awards for her work. These included Habitat for Humanity of Wake County, Wake County Master Gardeners of Raleigh, Raleigh Garden Club, Questers International, North Carolina Executive Mansion Docents, the Musical Box Society International in North Carolina, Women's Club of Raleigh, Rex Hospital Guild Volunteer in Raleigh, and White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh. To the end, she had a warm smile for those lucky enough to know her. Always seeing the positive and good in everyone, she brought out the best in her friends, family and fellow volunteers. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at 3 p.m. in the chapel at Westminster Canterbury, 1600 Westbrook Rd., Richmond. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts be made to White Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1704 Oberlyn Rd., Raleigh, N.C. 27608, or Westminster Canterbury of Richmond.
