Eva SLATER Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Oct. 23, 2009.
SLATER, Eva Newman, was born December 16, 1916 in Bronx, New York to Harry and Anna Newman. Her parents were Jewish immigrants from Poland who settled in the Bronx, where her father, Harry, started and built a successful furniture business. Eva was a graduate of Hunter College, Manhattan, N.Y., with a B.S. degree in chemistry. Eva and her husband, Arthur, built the family business, Slater Supply Company, in Farmingdale, New York. Eva's managerial contribution to the business was essential to its success. She raised three children, maintained the house, and tirelessly worked in Slater Supply. Eva was a champion of education, and she was vocal in curriculum and school issues, particularly issues of separation of Church and State. In a family of boys emphasizing sports, she developed a love of golf, winning the Class B Women's Club Championship at the Mill River Club in New York. Eva and Arthur retired to Boynton Beach, Fla., becoming a part of the Hunter's Run community. There she volunteered at her synagogue. Eva was very involved with various charitable organizations. Eva was known for her organizational skills, intelligence, charm and beauty. She moved to Richmond in 2002. Eva was predeceased by her husband, Arthur; and her older sister, Blanche Newman. She is survived by her three sons and their families, Mr. Jeffrey D. Slater of Long Island, New York, Dr. and Mrs. Dennis Slater; and grandsons, William and Jesse of Norwich, Conn.; and Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Slater; granddaughters, Ellen Gager and husband, Phillip, of Richmond, Virginia; Anna Fernbach and husband, Philip, of Providence, Rhode Island, Deborah Slater of Manhattan, New York; and by her sister, Harriet Friedman and husband, Harold, of Glendale, New York. A graveside service will be held at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery in Glendale, New York on Friday, October 23 at 1 p.m. Bruce and Joyce Slater will sit Shiva on Monday, October 26 and Tuesday, October 27 at their home on 4603 Monument Avenue, Richmond, Va.
