FREDERICK LINKOUS Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Mar. 14, 2010.
LINKOUS, Frederick Mark, departed this life on March 6, 2010 in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was born and raised in Virginia, spending much of his childhood in Charlottesville and Southwestern Virginia. Shortly after graduating high school, Mark left Virginia for New York, where he co-founded the band The Dancing Hoods. After a move to Los Angeles, he went back to Virginia where he started his most well-known and beloved project, Sparklehorse, and released four acclaimed albums. His music and words were deeply felt by people all over the world and his beautiful, dreamlike sounds were heard in his production and collaborations with other artists, including Tom Waits, PJ Harvey, Danger Mouse and Daniel Johnston. With all his accomplishments, Mark remained humble and extremely modest. He appreciated the creativity of others, not only in music, but also in art, film and literature. He was quiet and gentle, soft spoken and warm. He saw and felt beauty in a powerful way and he never rushed, unless he was on a motorcycle coming out of a hairpin turn. He had strong empathy, a compassionate heart and an exceptional sense of humor. He was kind and he was loved. He will be missed very much by his wife, Teresa Linkous; mother, Gloria Hughes Thacker; father, Frederick Linkous and stepmother, Leta; brothers, Matt, Paul and Daniel Linkous; sister-in-law, Melissa Linkous; his beloved nephew, Spencer Linkous; and many other well-loved family and friends. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, 4952 Warner Avenue, Suite 242, Huntington Beach, Calif. 92649. Services will be held at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond, Va. on Saturday, March 20, at 3 p.m.

My deepest sympathy goes to this incredibly talented man's family. I did see Mark play live in Portland OR in 2002, & he had a light that will shine on. I was so excited by his moving to Knoxville as I thought for sure he would play Bonnaroo eventually. I hope that y'all are able to find comfort.
Peace

Can't believe it.
I first saw Sparklehorse in London the night of Mark's mishap. Had already been a fan of Vivadixie before this. I went to Paris (from England) to see them support Radiohead and had the time of my life. Got to meet him in Bristol when he was touring for Good Morning Spider. He was kind and inviting, signed my album and was happy to talk about stuff like Grandaddy (who he said were "really cool.") He even told me the chords to one of his songs, which was funny because he couldn't quite remember what they were at first. He was a great artist and a really decent, polite man.
All my love to Teresa and Mark's family and friends, take care of eachother and don't ever forget that there must be loads of people like me who were made happy by Mark. He gave a lot of good to the world, perhaps sometimes without fully realising.
Thinking of you all and sending love through the cosmos. JC.

when i first came to richmond mark was working at astor's music on main street. i'd just started playing guitar and was constantly breaking the high e string. i'd walk in to the otherwise empty store and mark would be in the back quietly working on something. he always looked at me kind of strange when i just wanted one string, like, wouldn't it make more sense to buy a set? what did i know. fortunately, over the years i've gotten to know his brother, matt, melisa, and spencer. a wonderful family and my thoughts and prayers go out to them. and thanks to mark for making truly beautiful music and for selling me guitar strings, one at a time.

A terrible loss. I am so sorry for you all. He was such an amazing talent so under rated I still find it quite unbelievable. At least we have his music (of which there is too little). With love and best wishes. David

Our daughter had to order Sparklehorse music from England. Imagine our surprise to find that it was originated here.
So very sorry to read that there will be no more of this beautiful music.
