Harley SHAVER Obituary

SHAVER, Harley Woodrow, 84, a World War II combat decorated veteran and retired local businessman, died of complications from Alzheimer's disease Saturday, October 17, 2009, at McGuire Veterans Hospital. Mr. Shaver, the last survivor of 11 brothers and sisters, was born in Gilmer, W.Va., on November 6, 1924. His family moved to Virginia when he was a child. He served with the 29th Infantry Division at Omaha Beach on the Normandy Invasion and fought across Europe until the war's end. He received two Purple Hearts with the Oak Leaf Cluster and a Bronze Star for bravery in action. He was most proud of his Combat Infantryman Badge. He retired from the Department of Defense, Defense Supply Center, Richmond. He was a partner in Vacar Barber and Beauty Shops and later founded Accent on Hair. This chain of family hair care centers operated in the metro area for 36 years. Mr. Shaver is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elsie Keller Shaver; his son, Gary; and daughter and son-in-law, Dianne and Brian Shaunessy; and a host of nieces and nephews. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at 11 a.m., November 3, 2009. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.
