Just saw the rerun of Richmond Memories hosted by Harvey Hudson and like anyone else who might read this, finds it hard to believe that so much time has passed especially if there is anyone of his generation left. I am writing this as I knew Harvey thru my dad Lud Sterling who was his broadcasting partner in the sixties. So much time has passed leaving so many memories. Thanks to PBS for broadcasting this again...David.

So many times, I would call Harvey for advice or just to say hello. The gracious Harvey Hudson always had time. His generosity and professionalism was an example of a true Southern Gentleman. I am proud that Harvey referred to me as one of his BOYS. Thank you Harvey, you will always be in my heart.

Harvey was an inspiration to the Broadcasting Community. His Leadership and Direction helped many weather difficult times. He was a Mentor to young aspiring broadcasters and was always there with an encouraging word. One of the highlights of my Career was being called one of Harveys Boys. He was known and loved and will be remembered in the history of Richmond forever.

I am sorry for your loss. I participated in a short television program with Mr. Hudson some years ago. He was kind and gracious. It was great working with him.

Harvey, it was an honor to have you and "the gang" here for my mom's (Vera Weiss) birthday party last year, and we will all miss you terribly. Being a regular call-in to your show was always the highlight of her day. Thank you for brightening so many lives. Lois Woods (Midlothian, VA)

Uncle Harvey was a dear friend of my father Edward Dailey. I will miss you dearly Uncle Harvey and will keep the fond memories we had growing up with you and Aunt Lil, and the beautiful wedding with you and Aunt Bobbie at Bruton church in Williamsburg. I know you and dad will have alot to catch up on in heaven. I Love you very much. God Bless you

I only met and knew Harvey in the late 1960s and early 1970s, from my mother, Georgette Amowitz, having worked with him judging the Miss Virginia Pageant for a few years. I'd never heard him on radio, as I'd grown up listening to my hometown station and blowtorches like WABC out of New York. But I knew many of his Richmond contemporariies, who all thought very highly of him. Mom, who passed away last year, had kept up for some years, but I lost touch with him after I moved away from the Richmond area in the late 1970s. But he was a great guy and southern gentleman. Richmond has lost a gem.

Harvey was such a wonderful friend to my parents, Bill and Isabel Webb of Ashland. Our family will never forget Harvey's kind and funny remembrances offered at both our parents' funerals. He was surely never at a loss for the right words!! An era has ended. He will be missed. Our deepest sympathies to Harvey's family.

Harvey- We will miss you a lot. I know Grandma especially will. You were a great cousin/friend to her. I am so thankful that you were able to come to my wedding last month and got the chance to see everyone. It meant so much that you were there. You will be missed. Love, Laura Gable Capps

I will always remember the early 50s
working in the control room at WLEE.
I was able to see as well as hear Harvey's morning program with sidekicks
Lud Sterling, Carl Garratt and the Canary birds. The audio skits that were
a regular part of the show often had
"bloopers" that were always turned into
part of the comedy. Richmond has lost a
true comic, super salesman, and radio
pioneer.

Another great Richmond broadcasting legend has gone to his rest. Harvey was a great man who gave me my start in broadcasting at the age of 16. He mentored me and helped me obtain a long broadcasting career in radio and TV. If it wasn't for Harvey, I probably would not have started a career I loved.
Thanks, Harvey.

Unlike most of the people who personally knew Harvey Hudson, I met him only about three years ago. Although my senior by sixteen years I mmediately knew we had a lot in common, our sense of humor, love of the music of the Big Band era, political views, etc. I had the good fortune of dining with him frequently and his inviting me to join him during some of his broadcasts. I came to look upon Harvey as the big brother I never had and as one of my most cherrished friends. God bless and keep you. You will be dearly missed.

The voice of Richmond has gone silent. Like Alden Aaroe, Harvey was also the best radio announcer that ever received a license to broadcast.
No one would ever mistake Harvey's voice for anyone alse. He knew how to make you think you were sitting next to him back in the studio. He was a great saleman as well. He knew what he was talking about and could sell anything they wanted him to.
God Bless his family and know that he will be busy in Heaven with all the other radio greats doing the broadcast there.
Good bye old friend.

Anyone who has grown up in Richmond or lived here for any length of time knows the name "Harvey Hudson" and that wonderfully warm, rich voice of his. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Hudson several times back in the 1980s, when I worked as a server at the old Regency Inn. Mr. Hudson and Jess DuBoy would frequently stop in for lunch, and what a thrill for me to hear that voice I'd grown up listening to on the radio ordering the daily special! Always kind, always professional.
My mother worked at the old Friedman-Marks clothing company in the 1950s and early 1960s, and she always spoke fondly of Mr. Hudson as well, and his frequent "live shows" from there.
My deepest condolences to his family, and to all of Richmond. We've truly lost a legend.

This is truely a sad day! We're losing so many wonderful Richmond people that has made this town what it is. My daddy told me he won a contest ,a string of pearls for bringing in a tropicana bottle. My Mama & Daddy went together to the station. I wasn't born yet. This was late 40's or early 50's. I used to have all my LEE SHEETS with the TOP 100 SONGS! WE WILL MISS YOU!!! Linda C. I first heard Harvey Hudson and his sidekick Lud Sterling when I was 14 years old and living in Ginter Park. My radio had an earphone in my pillow so I could sneak a listen when I was supposed to be asleep. One morning I answered a quiz and won something. Remembering my grandmother who ran into Harvey at Atkinson & Howard Drugstore on Brookland Park Blvd in 1950 and answered a quiz to win a ham I was hooked…not on quizzes but on radio. I painted the fences around the towers at WLEE during my teen years and finagled my way inside the station. I hung around Commonwealth Ford and the John Marshall Hotel and anywhere else they broadcast just to be a part of it. They finally gave me a job at the West Broad Street studios (painting those fences) just to keep me away. Long story short, I worked there before, during and after college and after my service in the Army in Vietnam before being called to WBT in Charlotte, NC. Harvey kept in touch and had me work for him after those years before I moved to WTMJ in Milwaukee from which I retired and moved to NC in 2000. We not only kept in touch but he called me the day before he was stricken in October of this year just to say hello and to make sure I went to lunch with him when I got back to visit Richmond this month. Damn, Harvey…I’ll be there but, my longtime friend, you won’t but hopefully I can be there to say farewell. I appreciate and love you for all you did for me.

I remember when I was 7, 8 or 9.. my mother worked with Harvey Hudson as a Secretary for WLEE on W.Broad St in the 50s. I remember going in there at one of those ages, and watching him broadcast on the radio. He was larger than life as I remember, and he certainly has become one of the many wonderful legends here in Richmond.
I did not know him personally, but my dial was tuned to WLEE Radio for many many years. I even still have some old 45 rpm which came from the station which were given to my mother. When she was alive, she spoke of him often with great fondness.
My condolences go to the extended family of Mr. Hudson, and I also have a feeling, a mike is awaiting him and he is back on the air.

Dear Hudson family,
Oh, how wonderful it was to hear that warm and welcoming voice on WLEE. I lived in Richmond many years. He was such a delight when I met him at a Richmond event twenty years ago. How quickly time goes by. He will be sorely missed by all.
I have confidence he's flying among the angels and joining other loved ones we have lost.
Each of you are in my prayers and thoughts during your time of loss and sorrow.
With sincere sympathy
A fan of Harvey's forever,

I met Harvey 20+ years ago when he came to my Music Store for some music for his show.
Since that time he became more than a "customer", He became a close friend. We spoke or got together it least once a month.
He always started his conversation with "How are you, my friend".
I am going to miss him!
Richmond has lost another one of the great pioneers in live radio, a great friend, a great human being.
May God richly bless you, Harvey.

Harvey Hudson and Lud Sterling were the regular morning radio entertainers when my family was living in northside Righmond. His career was cartainly outstanding, and he is being remembered by many, many Richmonders who 'grew up' listening to him on radio. I had many Richmond Jr.High and High School teachers who related to us students many wonderful stories of when Harvey was their student.God bless his family and be fervently with them.
