Howard CONE Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Nov. 8 to Nov. 9, 2009.
CONE, Howard Berkley, a long time resident of Richmond, Va., died November 7, 2009 with his wife of 62 years, and children at his side. He was born January 21, 1919 in Williamston, N.C. After graduating from Fishburne Military School, Howard attended the University of North Carolina, where he was a member of Zeta Psi social fraternity. His studies were interrupted when he volunteered for the Army and served in the Pacific Theater (Guadalcanal, Northern Solomons, Fiji) of World War II. Upon completion of his three years of service, he returned to his native North Carolina to begin a long career in the tobacco industry. He and his beloved wife, Elizabeth Cone, also of Williamston, raised three children together. During his 46 year career, which culminated in becoming senior vice president for Universal Leaf, Howard and Liz were able to travel extensively and make friends across the globe. The Universal News publication may have summed up Howard best upon the occasion of his retirement: "Mention the name of Howard Cone and you know you'll get a smile, for everyone who knows him, has a story to tell about this well-liked manHe will be missed not only for his contributions to the Company and the industry, but for the good humor and fun that is so much a part of him". Howard was especially fond of golden retrievers, a good cigar, vacationing in Atlantic Beach, and playing golf. In his retirement years, he made a significant impact on the lives of his grandchildren through his constant presence in their varied activities. Howard and Liz are long time members of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Richmond. He received steadfast support and care during his last years from his devoted wife and nursing staff. He is survived by his wife, Liz; children, Berkley, Frances and David; daughter-in-law, Margarita Cone; son-in-law, Richard O. Harrell III; grandchildren, Richard, Winston, David and Parker Harrell, Margot, Lizzie and Cristina Cone. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 10, at the Good Shepherd Chapel of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Capital Fund of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 6000 Grove Ave., Richmond, Va. 23226.
