Irene Koebel Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Jan. 10, 2010.
KOEBEL, Irene Richardson, 74, of Richmond, passed away Friday, January 1, 2010 surrounded by family after a year-long battle with lung cancer. She was a dedicated employee of Westbury Pharmacy, Skilligalee Restaurant and Italian Kitchen Restaurant before retiring in 2000. After retirement she was quite busy taking care of homeless animals; working in her garden and surrounding herself with dear friends; all of which brought her great joy. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Louise Richardson, Florence R. Jenkins; stepfather, Gene Jenkins; and brother, Charles Richardson, all of Jacksonville, Fla. She was a kind and generous mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her. She is survived by her three children, Mark E. Koebel (Brenda), Cindy Proffitt Swift (Bill), and George "Shorty" Koebel (Linda); nine grandchildren, Shannan P. Bowman, Travis Proffitt, Ryan Koebel, Rachel Proffitt, Aaron Koebel, Michael Koebel, Greg Koebel, Michelle Koebel and Sarah Koebel; five great-grandchildren, Carter and Alex Bowman, Titus Koebel, Saylor Proffitt and Reese Koebel, born December 28, 2009, all of Richmond, and all the apple of her eye. She is also survived by former husband and friend, Preston "Sonny" Thompson; one brother, Andy Richardson of Virginia Beach; devoted sister, Helen "Richie" Richardson; youngest sister, Sandy McKinnon, all of Jacksonville, Fla.; and many nephews, nieces, loved ones and friends in Ohio. Out of love and respect to our mother, her wishes will be granted and no services will be held.

i never had the honor to know how wonderful aunt irene was. i met her once when i went to virginia for uncle don's funeral, and with what respect, love, and loyality gma koebel had for aunt irene, i felt like i knew her all my life. gma koebel would tell me stories about when she would visit aunt irene and uncle don and all the fun she would have going to different places with her and all the long talks they had. She always said how she really missed aunt irene and that aunt irene was always in gma's prayers and heart, not to mention how aunt irene made not only her life, but uncle don's life as well. my heart goes out to all the people who knew and loved her, as well as her children and grandchildren. she was a beautiful lady with a beautiful personality that shines through her kids and grandkids. thanks aunt irene, you will be sadly missed by everyone
