James Saum Obituary

SAUM, James Baines, Lt. Col. USA (Ret.), 88, of Hingham, Mass., formerly of Rich-mond, died Sept-ember 28, 2009. "Jay" grew up in the Washington, D.C. area and graduated from the University of Maryland. During World War II he was an infantry officer in combat in France and Germany. After the war, he left the Army briefly, married, then rejoined the military to become a career Army officer. He served in many places in the U.S. and overseas, including Panama, Korea, West Virginia, Kansas, Hawaii, Vietnam, and Belgium. His career included a number of years stationed in Virginia, at Fort Belvoir and Fort Lee. After retiring, he lived in Windsor Farms for over 25 years, during which he enjoyed travel, antiques, cultivating roses, visiting relatives, and keeping in touch with many friends from his career in the Army. His wife of 62 years, Helen G. Saum, died in March, 2009. He was the father of James B. Saum, Jr. and of the late Timothy B. Saum, and the brother of Robert W. Saum and the late Hugh H. Saum, Jr. He is also survived by daughters-in-law Jean Byassee and Nancy Sodano; granddaughter Elizabeth Byassee Saum, and a number of nieces and nephews.
