David B. Saum
September 11, 1942 – March 10, 2025
David Byron Saum, age 82 of Monroe, passed away suddenly on Monday, March 10, 2025 in Holt, MI.
Born September 11, 1942 in Monroe. He was the only child of the late Zeno and Edna (Murphy) Saum. David graduated from St. Mary Catholic Academy in 1961.
After school, he proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force. David served in the Vietnam War, where he was a flight tech. Afterwards, he spent 20 years of his career in the Air Force as a TSGT or Technical Sargent, retiring in 1981. He then went to work at the Fermi Power Plant and lastly, he worked for the US Postal Service at the old Redford Station for 19 years before having to medically retire.
David met and married the love of his life: Barbara Burns on October 28, 1966 in Denton, Maryland. Together they raised their family and spent over 29 years together, before Barbara sadly passed away in 1995.
David was a member of the American Legion. In his younger years, he was an avid bowler. He played on many men and couples leagues throughout the years. He even coached his daughter's bowling team. In his free time, he enjoyed jigsaw and cross word puzzles. David was known as papa by his grandkids who had thought of him as the funniest person ever. He deeply cared for his family and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Beloved father of Beverly Rocheleau. Stepfather of Bruce (Diana) McAlister. Loving grandfather of Liberty, Destiny, Gage, and Harmony Rocheleau. Step grandfather of Sara McAlister and Jessica Gough. Also survived by his four-legged companion: Daisy.
In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by wife: Barbara Saum; stepson: Scott McAlister; and stepdaughters: JoEllen and Paula McAlister.
Friends and family are invited to a visitation on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at St. Joseph Cemetery, Monroe in the Chapel from 9 to 11 am. A committal and honor guard service will start at 11 am. Burial will follow.
