The last time I saw Jean was at our Dr appt. I was feeling down when I went in, but when I left, the whole waiting area was smiling and laughing just from listening to her. I met her when I was 18 in 1994 and I feel so blessed to have had a chance to get to know this earthly angel. Her beautiful smile will last forever....

Joyce & family,
Whenever I would run into Ms. Jean at the Food Lion, she was like a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day. She had inspiring words and I always left uplifted. If she had that affect in only a few moments, I can imagine level of joy she bought to your family. Thank God for sharing such a gift with us.

Leroy, Joyce,Thomas and grandsons:
Jean was one of a kind-always a kind word, willing to do all that she could for you and most of all, THANKING GOD FOR HER JOURNEY ON EARTH (her famous words-God is so good.)
May it bring comfort to you to remember that God is standing with you. He specializes in healing hurting hearts, and He will see you through this difficult time. Know also that at this very moment many are hurting with you and lifting you up in prayer.

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time. I will always remember Jean's warm and pleasant smile! Joyce and Boo-Boo, I will never forget the good times we shared back in the day when I used to stay at Ms. Doris & Mr. Elijah's house with Rose and Nita. To the woman who looked remarkably like my mother and who always kept a victorious smile; God kept you and God kept you and God kept you ,til He decided He was ready. To the family both home and First Bethel Baptist Church, a jewel has been chipped to be placed in the Armoire of God's Treasures. May God continue to embrace you with strength during this time. yours in Christ, Sis. Vernell Braxton(daughter of the late Earlene Magazine) and family.

April 26, 2010

To the Patterson and Atkins families,
You know you are in my deepest thoughts and in my most earnest prayers as you go through this season of grief. The passing of "Momma Jean", as I affectionately called her has saddened the entire First Bethel Baptist Church Community. However, knowing that "to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord" brings us the peace that surpasses all understanding. "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints". Jean was a saint who brought laughter, love and happiness to many lives. We thank God today for the time He allowed her to share in our lives. When He saw that she had had enough, He called her home and she went with Him with a smile. Know that I am here for each member of your family. Call on me whenever I can be of service to you. In the meantime, hold on to His promise when He said, "weeping may endure for a night.....but joy cometh in the morning.
In His Service,
Your Pastor and your friend,

Dr. Johnnye S. Massenburg-Johnson

"Earth has no Sorrow that Heaven can't Heal" My prayers and blessings go to this wonderful wonderful family. I know she is sitting on the right side of Jesus our Lord, this sweet, beautiful, thoughtful woman. I loved her so. Her spirit was wonderful and I will miss the times when I could just call and talk.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
