Joan Heyser Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Nov. 19 to Nov. 22, 2009.
HEYSER, Joan McCullough, 77, died at home on Tuesday, November 17, 2009. Born and raised in Carlisle, Pa., Joan attended Grove City College and graduated as a registered nurse from Germantown Hospital School of Nursing in Philadelphia. After her marriage to John O. Heyser Jr., the couple moved frequently due to his employment with Reynolds Metals Company. They raised their family while living in Wilmington, Del. and moved to Richmond in 1971. In addition to her beloved husband of 55 years, Joan is survived by a daughter, Mary Ann Heyser Wright; and son, John Ray Heyser, both of Richmond; Survivors also include granddaughters, Lauren and Emily Wright, who fondly called her Mea; several cousins and many, many friends. Joan displayed a passionate zest for life and was a loving and supportive mother and wife. She was ever mischievous, enjoying telling jokes to her friends and sometimes playing jokes on her friends. She used her nursing experience for years to help many of her friends and neighbors with their medical care, ever willing to administer shots or dispense sage advice. Joan actually had sage advice for most areas of your life! Handy and creative around the house, Joan was a fabulous cook and loved to play bridge. She had a special fondness for her family's cottage at Big Pond in Shippensburg, Pa., which she visited on weekends and in the summer for 75 years. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, New York 10018. Mea,

I will love you forever, love you for always. You were a person that always let us know how much you loved us, through thick and thin. You were always there to talk even when we didn't know what you say, you always did. The compassion you had towards live and the wisdom you shared always gave me the will to carry on even through the hardest times. You are not here now to help me through this hard time but in my heart you are, this is the only way I am able to make it through. Your legacy and your will to power through gave me everything I ever needed to succeed in life. I will miss you forever, the 22 years we had together was to too short. Please stay with me through everything I do in life, I love you and Miss you more than you could ever know... You are my hero and I strive to be like you. Positive and Forever Faithful to my family and friends! I love everyone dearly who has been with us through this time! God Bless all of you. It is hard to believe that it has been more than two weeks. It seems like just yesterday I was talking to her on the phone, telling her about my grades on the speaker phone so Pa was listening too.. It is hard to sleep when you know and loved so much is not going to be there when you wake up.. I love you so much Mea. It was too soon for you leave us but I worshiped every moment I had with you! I hope that I can carry your legacy on and be like you, I respect you more than anyone and you are my hero!

Queen Joan's ascent to the throne is a great loss. She brought us a lot of light and countless laughs with her wicked sense of humor. And she taught us all quite a bit about how to live and love life. We will miss her, and we wish all of you comfort in this painful time.

I work as a cashier at the Kroger Gayton Crossing Store. I recognized Mrs. Heyser from the photo in her beautifully written obituary. I've always been happy to see Mr. and Mrs. Heyser in the store. Some of her delightful comments brightened my day and gave me lasting smiles. Once, in reference to discussing the abundance of spring pollen, she mentioned that they were planning a trip through the mountains of PA, quipping "We like to get a REAL GOOD dose of it."
My deepest sympathy and prayers are with your family for your profound loss. I hope the memories she has left you will give you strength. Keep living your lives by her wonderful example and "get a REAL GOOD dose of it".

Dear Jack, John, Mary Ann, Jim, Lauren and Emily,

Joan (aka "the Princess") was such a wonderful woman and an inspiration to us all. We had SO much fun with the Princess and B-11 on our family cruise to Alaska in the early 80's. She wrote us several letters after that, affecting the persona and wording of an English princess, and they were just hilarious. B-11 is so-named because that was his winning Bingo number! Just an example of the wit and laughter we all enjoyed so much.

We loved our several visits to Big Pond over the last 55 years. It was such a lovely retreat, and we so much enjoyed being with the family there.

We just wish we lived closer, so we could be with you at this difficult time. Cousins shouldn't live so far away! Please know you're in our thoughts and our hearts.

Love from Carol & Tal Godding

Dear Jack,

We are so sorry to hear of the death of your wife. It is too bad that families are so spread out around the country and we never got the chance to know each other very well. Even though my dad died when I was so young, I have very pleasant memories of his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and we just wanted you to know that we care.

You have our sincere condolences,

Janice Heyser Campbell &

John,

I never met your Mom, but knowing you, she was obviously an excellent mother. Having lost my father in 2002, my prayers go out for you and your family. You are right when you say she is in a peacefull place waiting for you. Spending eternity with her will be a joy for all of you. Keep the FAITH!

My condolences,

Mary Ann, Jim, Lauren, Emily, John & John, I enjoyed Joan's fiesty spirit and it's great you spoke of her mischief, practical jokes, and the good life she led. Though she'll be missed greatly, just knowing she's probably still up to mischief in her new home makes me smile. I hope it does you too. Our sincere sympathies to you all. Gwen, Don & Cassidy Hipp

John,
Although I met your Mom only briefly thirty years ago, I see now I have known her well for many years in you. As do you, the Joan Heyser in these pictures--and that balloon hat--teaches delight. How lucky she was to have an apt pupil, you to have such a teacher, and we all to have you as her apostle. I trust you and all your family will keep teaching her example even in this hardest of hard times.

john, though karen and i only knew your mom through your shared comments, we are with you in your loss. her and your family's recent struggles underscore the comfort of "everything happens for a reason". often that comfort only comes with time. we are all bouyed by the wonderful and vivid memories of joan's life and love.

John & Family,
Just being the administrative assistant in an office that works with John, I had no way of knowing Joan. However...when looking at the pictures of her, I can tell that she had the kind of spirit that is easy to miss.
If they put all the Joan's together in heaven, your mom could be sitting next to my aunt and making her laugh.
God bless you and yours,
Jaclyn Haydu from CFS

Mrs. Heyser will be missed! What a sense of humor, love of life, and adoration of her wonderful husband, daughter, son and granddaughters. A life well-lived and I am sure there are some wry comments being shared up above as we grieve here. She was one in a million...
