JOANNE BRINKLEY Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch from Nov. 19 to Nov. 21, 2010.
BRINKLEY, Joanne Raines, 74, of Richmond, passed away after a brief illness on November 17, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Sumner Brinkley Jr.; her parents, William Giles and Grace Mosey Raines; and her sister, Francis Raines Lowe. She is survived by her son, James Randolph Vivian Daniel IV (Heather Hewitt); her daughter, Derby Raines Brackett (Bernard Douglas); her grandchildren, Parks Hewitt Daniel, William Hutton Adcock, and James Randolph Vivian Daniel V; and her devoted Brinkley stepchildren. Born in Jackson, Mississippi, to Canadian parents and raised outside of Havana, Cuba, on a sugar plantation, Jody graduated from St. Catherine's School and Sweet Briar College. She served on the Board of Directors and the Alumni Board of Sweet Briar, the Board of Governors for St. Catherine's, the Executive and Foundation Boards for the Richmond Eye and Ear Hospital, and the Foundation Boards for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and Westminster Canterbury of Richmond. She also served as a Director, Finance Committee Chair, and Historic Garden Week Chair for the Garden Club of Virginia, as well as President of the Three Chopt Garden Club. In addition, she served with the Junior League of Richmond and on the Junior Board of Children's Hospital Foundation. Jody lived with great energy, whether through her volunteer activities, international travel, playing golf and Bridge, or her commitment to her family and friends, who appreciated her great sense of humor. A funeral service will be held on Monday, November 22, at 1 p.m. at St. James's Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Christopher's School Student Leadership Center or St. James's Episcopal Church.

Randy and Derby, I was so very sorry to learn about the loss of your Mom. She was such an energetic and gracious lady with a wonderful sense of humor. I still have such fond memories of spending many Thanksgivings with you all. And memories of your Mom helping me with my spanish. Recently Jody has been such a trusted and helpful friend during my mom and dad's illnesses. I thank her so much for her words of encouragment and support. She will be greatly missed. All my love and prayers to you and your families.

Jody was such a gracious person. We were classmates at St. Catherine's, and I always enjoyed being with Jody at our reunions when the class of '53 got together. She will be missed, and particularly by my sister, Jean, with whom she shared so much. My sincere sympathy to all the family. Judy Hill Lawes, West Hartford, Ct.

Dear Randy and Derby,
I was so sorry to hear about your mother. I have such fond memories of her and Royall "carrying on, dancing and laughing." Jody Bug, as Dad liked to call her, was a wonderful, warm woman, and so much fun to be around. I know your family will miss her terribly.
