Jose HERNANDEZ Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Sep. 22, 2010.
HERNANDEZ, Jose Orestes, entered eternal life on September 21, 2010. He was born on July 20, 1926 to Roman and Eusebia Milian Hernandez in the town of Caraballo, Cuba. Before the Communist revolution, Jose became one of Havana's most sought after tailors. After the revolution, he maintained a struggle for many years to secure the legal emigration of himself, his wife and children first to Spain and then to the United States. Jose was one of 13 children. Having secured the blessings of liberty for himself and his immediate family, he never forgot those he left behind. Throughout his life, he helped to support those family members who remained in Cuba. Jose is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Maria Oliva; his three children, Jose "Henry" Enrique Hernandez, Lourdes "Louri" Hernandez Anderson and Antonio "Tony" Hernandez; and eight grandchildren, Alina Hernandez Bice, Kelly Hernandez, Tracy Hernandez, Lesly Hernandez, David Anderson Jr., John Anderson, Eve Anderson and Justin Hernandez. A Rosary will be prayed for Jose at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church on Friday, September 24, at 10 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. and burial at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery. A reception will be held after the burial at Our Lady of Lourdes Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Arrangements by Bliley's.

I have to say, he was a great Abuelo (grandfather). He always greeted me with a hug and a smile and wanted to know how I was doing.

I remember traveling to Spain with he and Abuela (my grandmother) when I was sixteen. Abuela and I would walk ahead exclaiming over the beautiful sites. Every now and then we'd have to look around and ask, "Where is Abuelo?" We'd find him walking slowly behind us videotaping everything he could and with a content smile on his face. Every time I think of that trip, I remember Abuelo with that video camera and it makes me smile with fondness.

He will be missed.

I love you Abuelo and it won't be the same without you.

With Love, Alina Hernandez Bice
