Kathryn Rice Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Apr. 23, 2010.
RICE, Kathryn Jane, of Richmond, Va., formerly of Towson, Md., passed away on April 21, 2010, at the age of 84. She was born in Gettysburg, Pa., to Lottie Annis and Charles Henry Reck. She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, William Lee Rice; and her sisters, June Marion Lowe and Hazel Romaine Scott. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Rice Eubank and her husband, Clay, of Richmond, Va.; and her son, Mark William Rice and his wife, Dawn, of Bel Air, Md.; two dear grandchildren, Carson Allman Eubank and Erin Elizabeth Rice; and several cousins, nieces and nephews; including her devoted nephew, F. Carson Lowe and his wife, Judy, of Myrtle Beach, S.C. Jane was a graduate of Johns Hopkins University with a degree in nursing. She served briefly as a member of the U.S. Army Corps of Nursing and then worked at Johns Hopkins Hospital until her children were born. She returned to nursing at St. Joseph's Hospital in Towson, Md., where she worked for 30 years. After retiring, Jane moved to Richmond, Va., where she was an avid Bridge player who loved to read and travel. Jane will be lovingly remembered for her grace, dignity, tenacity and sense of humor. Her spirit will endure whenever those who were fortunate to have known her smile, laugh, share a good story or offer a helping hand to others. A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 24, 11:30 a.m., at Dulaney Memorial Gardens in Maryland. A memorial will be held in Richmond in the near future. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.

I am very sorry to hear of Mrs. Rice's passing. She was a strong and wise lady who was always very kind to me. For a time in my younger years, Jane was like a second mother to me. Always patient; always understanding. Funny and forgiving. I know that God's first words to her were "Well done". Gary Riggin

What a lovely lady who will be missed very much. A stellar bridge player, loving mother and grandmother, true Cougar supporter, she was always ready for the next adventure, eager to see what was around the corner. So many people will miss you.

My thought and prayers go out to the family. I got to know Ms Rice from the beauty shop and she will definately be missed. She was a joy to talk too and she loved her children and grandchildren.
